Caught a beauty in the surf. A new personal best. 46". Took some great advice from Ron also known as Stripermaineiac....it really paid off. I did keep the fish and had a big dinner with a lot of friends. I'd like to note that it was the only one I kept and released over 20 other fish. Caught it in Southern Maine off the beach on a clam on 17 lb. mono. Great fight and again, thank you Ron!

Beautiful cow, congrats. How did she taste?

Rockfish9 08-14-2012 02:15 PM

Congrats on your new P.B...

JoeBass 08-14-2012 02:15 PM

tasted fantastic by all accounts. filets cut into portions, seasoned and then fresh herbs and a lemon slice on top, drizzle of olive oil. Baked at 425f for 35 minutes. Top with sauted chanterelles we had hunted.
I've never cooked a large striper but I thought it was as good as the slot fish I've kept in the past.

Awesome! Contests. Did you get a weight?

JoeBass 08-14-2012 02:50 PM

I did not get a weight. It was 46.5" and had a girth of almost 24". Any way to figure the weight from this? Any guesses?

Length x girth squared divided by 800= roughly 30lbs give or take 10% congrats.....

Yeah I'd say 10% on the up swing. 33 pounds seems right if I had to guess. Nice fish:uhuh:

Congrats! Nice fish, nice to have friends like Ron and nice to see some action up in Maine. I love it up there, been going up for about 10 years now with the family. The luck has been dwindling the past few years up Booth Bay area but like I said I love it up there. "Maine the way life should be"! :uhuh:

Sea of Atlas 08-14-2012 07:41 PM

Congrats on a nice fish! Ron's been a big help to me.

numbskull 08-15-2012 06:00 AM

So what was Ron's advice, "do as I say, not as I do" ?

JoeBass 08-15-2012 07:58 AM

Thank you for all of the comments. That's a fish I'll never forget. I don't catch big ones like that, so it was a trip. Ron basically gave me confidence, told me to move if the action wasn't happening, suggested clams if I went the bait route and basically pumped me up with his enthusiasm and knowledge.

stripermaineiac 08-15-2012 06:55 PM

Glad it helped. Hope we get to connect next time. Time on the water makes it work. Tight lines Ron

bassballer 08-17-2012 09:25 AM

Thats a hell of a Maine fish. Seems like that slot you guys have is working.

stripermaineiac 08-17-2012 11:13 AM

There's a lot bigger than that around where he landed that one. 2 over 50 there last yr an 1 so far this yr. Hard part with fishing Maine is the 3500 miles of fishing spots to choose from.Just within 30 miles of my place there's more fishing than the whole of Cape Cod.This yr with all the mud in the rivers from the monsoon type rains we're getting the beaches are the place to go an the rock piles that abut them. Ron
