Pretty cool site my Dad sent to me.

Live Ships Map - AIS - Vessel Traffic and Positions

Been using all summer. There are 2 aps (mAIS , marinetraffic.com) which you can download onto your smartphone which will broadcast your position via phone GPS to your enabled friends. Freak and I formed a fleet so we know when/where each other fishes (optional to turn on/off). Lot easier then spending $300-400+ for a new AIS VHF radio.

Use it all the time, my girl can see where we are at offshore. Plus my friends in my fleet

Good luck Phil.

you add vessels to your fleet. you can set up email notifications. I get an email when phil leaves and when he gets back.
Just add fishbucket to your fleet.
If you don't care who knows where you are it's great..

It however does NOT transmit your position to vessels that have the AIS system.It only works on the app and online.
It is NOT a cheap alternative to AIS.
it's a neat little toy.

however if you want to know where all the whale watch boats are, it's great!

Sometimes this isn't the best thing in the world.............

which app- mAIS or marinetraffic.com ? I don't want two apps.

mais is the one that turns your phone into a transmitter.
marine traffic is where you view it.

Interesting how he went across long island....

It pings every few minutes. You tell it when to ping when you set it up.

Phil has Verizon so service sux, it works great with at&t
Just have to remember to turn it off when your not on the boat it it'll show you heading down rt95

I have verizon too, it sucks on the water.

So, can we see you on Georges since it uses your gps?

It relays to marinetraffic thru cell service. You'll lose me around wildcat

???How are you able to see me if as Freak says I only broadcast to MY FLEET???? Are you on this Dennis, I would like to add you to my fleet! That's' better than being friends on FB...;)

You just have to let others know how you registered, aka your boat name. This will allow anyone to follow you but all the rights and privileges of MY FLEET membership require exchanging of pleasantry's so you get e-mail notifications.

For anyone interested that is not in My Fleet and fails to get e-mail notifications, my next live tracking broadcast will be Saturday morning starting about 7AM.:)

Still waiting for the damn email from marinetraffic.com to make an acct!

Although this is an ap to be used at sea, it actually does provide your location from anywhere you get phone signal. Let's suppose you are lost/hurt in the woods, activation of the AIS signal would permit anyone to find your exact location via the PC ap. Just a thought.

Is anyone having trouble adding a record to "My Fleet"? I keep getting "The requested service is unavailable".

Maybe you have to set up an account? Username and password, email etc...

Couple of ships right now south of Montauk...have fun.

Don't think I have ever seen the screen that void of ships, looks like all but the Bounty listened and heeded warnings!

Looks like the HISTRIA GEMMA is giving Sandy the big F-U..........

Althought the tracks shows it just did a 180 turn and now going 1kt..............

Phil, I just read that it sank off NC, 14 rescuded - 2 missing

Not a single ship out of port on open waters! Sandy sent everyone packing...

Read that a Disney cruise ship had real trouble with the storm returning to Miami: Captain said much worse than forecast!

Anybody else get activated to add to "my fleet". Here's an image from my computer after today's trip. I know there is at least one out there that followed my journey in real-time.

Make sure you turn it off when you are cheating on your wife...it could get ugly otherwise. ;)

This is cool but you need a cell signal, most of the time I don't have one. I rarely can get one at my house!

I was thinking of getting an AIS but I keep asking myself do I really want everyone to know exactly where I am all the time???? I suppose I can turn it on and off as desired. The app seems like a fun toy to check in on buds...esp during the derby :)
