S.O.S from the Surf
Question.
Let's say you are out on a remote rock. You slip. The next thing you know, you are floating towards the Azores. What technology would you want to have on your belt? A VHF/GPS thingie? One of those "Spot" thingies? iPhone in a water proof bag? |

iPhone has lifeproof cases and also sell life vests to keep them afloat

Anything BUT a spot.

Guardian angel. Seriously, if you can't get ashore you'd better have friends nearby with a gaff.

My arms for swimming, and a buddy that can hear me scream.
|
As a former EE you gave me an idea that may be worth implementing if not already patented.

Swim fins or a bottle of 18 yr old Mccallan...... just saying.

The best rated EPIRB money can buy.
|
pint of 100 proof vodka tucked in my pocket and smokes/lighter in a ziplock....
somehwere 10 miles out.... captain- "you need help?" me-"i could use some ice" |
OMG....I am so...LOL!
|
a little common sense about standing on a submerged rock in a remote locale at night for a fish. You should assume you are on your own and no one is coming to get you.

Even if you have your phone and it's dry, are you going to be able to make a call if you're struggling to stay afloat while drifting out to sea? I'm not sure I want to rely on that.

Using an iPhone in a water proof bag with gloves may a bit challenging. |

SPOT when down on you? OMG. Not cool!!!
Yah. No Facebook for me while I am fishing! ;-) Thank you for the tip! |
I think if you really want a plan B a floating VHF is not a bad idea and maybe somekind of waterproof strobe. I have both on me while kayak fishing at all times.

For going off shore - I picked up a Personal Locator Beacon or PLB. small cell phone sized EPIRB w/ a strobe

If Kate Upton qualifies as technology for my belt, then I choose her

She probably qualifies as the equivalent of 4 man "passive flotation device" .
|
I bet she would go down easy!
|
Today the pretty standard lost at sea gear is an epirb and a strobe.
A pair of fins will increase your range and ability to swim in any direction by about 10X or more. |

The same pfd can be set for auto or manual by removing the bobbin or pill, like you.

I have a pfd belt that works on a CO2 cartridge.... fits just under my surf belt....
i fell in twice a beavertail without it i was also a young stupid goog that shouldn't have been casting on the rocks with tevas on.. lesson learned Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |
I have had a SOSPENDERS for ten years now. Anytime I go on a boat I wear it. Anytime I am going to be standing in moving water I weat it, like the North River and so on. Alwys have a couple of recharge setups as well. It works on manual or auto inflate upon dunking.
