Fishing Cape Cod Canal

Looking to fish the canal for the first time. Going in a few days regardless of the reports. Any productive spots to work and top water or jigs early in the season? Any feed back would be great

onecastmike2003 04-17-2014 04:26 AM

He's funny .... Good luck with that dude

It's good to be ambitious but I don't think you'll have much luck with either top water or jjigging, but I think it would be beneficial for you to go and scout out and read the area.
They'll be here soon thou.
The Canal is a great place to fish, once you get hooked all bets are off!

trevier 04-17-2014 05:29 AM

dress warm, water is still in the low 40's, any wind down there and you'll freeze your ass off.

got to get down there soon. if nothing else to limber the rods, swim some plugs, ride my girls bike, and have b'fast at leo's.

Slipknot 04-17-2014 06:40 AM

you won't have to worry about crowds

try chunking

you may be better off at places nearby where the water is warmer and closer to where holdovers would be

didn't someone catch a bass in April on a hot dog one year?

MAKAI 04-17-2014 06:50 AM

Cod are biting in the canal.

Agree with the holdover spot comment. If you like to fish bait possibly go for Tog this time of year.

The whole place is a "spot".

bigfish larry (#6 poster in this thread) posted a bunch of videos of him fishing the canal over the winter, find those areas and do what he was doing and you'll be good to go.

Too funny

Goto Canal Bait and Tackle - they sell a Chart of the Ditch with all the "spots" labeled for about $10 (its also printed on their T-shirt).

Where, when, and how to fish each spot is part of the learning curve. But it will get you pointed in the right direction.

Have fun.

Get a tide chart and fish slack water around sunrise during a new or full moon period. Plenty of good spots to choose from. The real deal doesn't kick off til the second half of May.

There's a 13 year old kid down there with his deadbeat dad all the time...follow the kid and do what he does.

The Dad Fisherman 04-17-2014 12:14 PM

The kid brings the dad along strictly as Eye Candy...:hihi:

tysdad115 04-17-2014 12:16 PM

Thanks Kevin, didn't know you cared!

Really proud of you guys for not busting the guys balls about asking where to go.
There was a time, here, when he would have gotten ripped for asking where to go.

ProfessorM 04-17-2014 03:39 PM

I agree Paul. Not enough help given out on sites anymore really. Not everyone is out to take your spot or crowd you out of your special area. I at one time many years ago would not have been very forthcoming with info on an area I fish as I thought that very way but as I get older I have come to realize that it is just fishing and that most people, there still exists some A holes I fish near and often with including friends, really just want to enjoy themselves and to have a good time. Any time the gentleman wants to tag along with me he is welcome, although all I can really offer him is many years of experience on how to aggravate the hell out of oneself. P.

tysdad115 04-17-2014 04:44 PM

My sarcastic advice wasn't far from true...OP you are a bit early to expect to catch something down there. But you can go down and get a feel for it. Head down before an east turn, water will be low, ride along to look for spots that might look fishy. Check out the same spot an hour into the turn to see how it changes. Take notes.
In the event fish actually pass through watch for someone who is doing well, do as they are doing. Etiquette is key to making friends down there, don't be afraid to ask questions when your there. You'll find better responses in person than online. (Something to learn there too). And I was serious, if you see a kid bailing fish and his handsome devil dad taking pictures of him stop and say hi. The kid is a wealth of information.

Op give it a try. Don't let the overly possesive types get to you. if you've fished for any time at all you'll pick up on the place quick. The whole place is a spot. Like a puzzle it gets easyier with time. You may even get lucky this early ,others have. Take binoculars an a camera.

Canal

I'll be down this weekend scouting some of the hot spots. Use a light pole and tackle, maybe some small tin, slow retreive near the bottom around the herring run. But if that doesn't work, breakfast at Leo's is the best.

Mike P 04-17-2014 11:27 PM

You know, we have a "How To, FAQs.....etc" forum here and somewhere in my aging memory I seem to recall there being a post about this Canal of which you speak.......

HEY! I resent that.

The Dad Fisherman 04-18-2014 06:57 AM

Where is this Leo's of which you speak? Nothing tops off a good morning of fishing like a good breakfast......I always just end up at Dunks.

Leo's is just past RedTop

ProfessorM 04-18-2014 09:08 AM

Leo's is good but takes a back seat to Marshland on 6A in Sandwich by a long shot IMO.

Is that considered a spot burn? It's tough enough to get a seat there already, lol.

ProfessorM 04-18-2014 03:17 PM

Yeah I know but not this time of year. Crowds can be a pain in summer so stay away. I like Perseys better than Leo's too but with the stupid bridge still not done yet it makes harder to get there.

Don't forget the Blueberry muffins 5 egg omelettes.

Paul, I have always been about the business, get in fish and leave, but now as I get older, I now know I've been missing out on catching up with friends...

This year I have already promised myself to step back and enjoy what I've have what I've done and do what's important and catch up with Buddy's that I don't spend time with.

ProfessorM 04-18-2014 07:27 PM

you inviting me to breakfast:)

I'll be at Marshland tomorrow morning around 8 if anyone has interest. Then its off to do the slave labor thing down cape. I am even going to see Capesams tomorrow. He is still alive:uhuh:

I feel your pain 5/0. I hardly have any time to hang around. At least my wife always tells me so. :wall:
