great white eating a seal
3 Attachment(s)
Last Saturday I had the pleasure of having a great white harvest a seal right in front of me. The 1st picture is from my cell cam but in my opinion is the best - it shows how close the hit was and my girlfriend in the picture gives you some idea as to how big the sucker was (I now figure it to be closer to14-17 feet than the 12-15 I have below). My girlfriend gets the credit for all of the other pictures - as soon as she saw the hit she dashed to the front of my truck, grabbed her camera and ran to the water.
I know some of you may have seen some of these pictures - I've sent the to assorted friends, and you know how the internet works, but here are some more and the story. This is what I sent to Saltfly when he asked me for details: ‘About 200 yards east of #8 at the sticks, her and I were walking back to the truck after a swim, just about at the truck she looked back at me and saw the hit - I think the seal popped out of the water to watch us an got smacked when it turned its back. Maybe 15 yards out in the corridor they travel, close to low maybe 6’ of water, a single seal medium sized maybe 300# or so. I think he killed the seal with the initial hit, pretty much cut it in half, didn’t see it move much after that. The shark gave it a minute to bleed out (you can see all of the blood in the water) and then returned to feed. Wish we had cameras like yours, she had a digital and I just had my cell, so you know how it goes with those – you push the button and the shutter takes time to fire, so I told her to just keep firing. Maybe 12-15 ft long, ate the whole thing in about 3-4 minutes and was on its way. The pictures don’t do justice to how awesome the scene was. How many seals do you think simply disappear like that? No evidence. Doubt anyone would have know about it if we were not there.' Enjoy! |

Not a fan of sharks until they eat delicious seals.
Good Shark - good Boy |
Thats awesome. Lots of birds in some of those pics. Would love to see that in person.

ditto to all...just awesome...a moment you will never forgot!

Fantastic photos! That would have made an incredible video. Thanks for sharing
|
very cool and very close. I'm sure it happens more than we know
|
did you say you were walking back to your truck "after a swim"????
|
Holy Shzz. That is really close to the beach. The coming back from a swim part needs further clarity!
Also kind of neat how first hand you saw the classic "taste bite" that always gets reported and then the actuall feed. In this case maybe it shows a "kill bite" which would indicate a "taste bite" is one where the shark really is not committing to a full blown attack. This is really cool, great job. Thanks for sharing. Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |
unreal. would've loved to have seen that

I am done swimming

FANTASTIC!:uhuh: thanks for posting those too bad you didn't have a drone with a video camera :D glad to hear you got out of the water in time |
Don't go in the water !!!!! Would be nice if the pictures could be put into a video.

Yeah, me and the girl had just been in the water maybe 100 yards down to the right in the pic - that's how I have a pretty good idea that it was about 6' deep where the shark hit. But shark are after tasty seals, not fat white guys...In speaking with the head shark guy for the state he thinks the shark had been in front of me for some time just waiting for his shot.
Haven't posted in a while because of all the life events that have come down the pike - parents aging, running a business, girlfriend with dog, beach closure, seals eating everything in the ocean so I don't even bother getting up, etc. but I thought that the viewing audience would truly appreciate these. I actually have 40+ more shots that I just reviewed for the 2nd time and there are some other good ones in there. One is of the shark going straight at the seal away from you (so it is like looking down the barrel of a gun) his dorsal is out of the water and his back is showing. Looks like a submarine, a good 3' wide. I now think the seal came up from under the seal flipper first and bit him off at the waist. The thing was frickin huge. Still basking in the afterglow... |
post those pics! really incredible that you witnessed this...!

I was out off peaked hill bar yesterday and some guy on the radio reported hooking and getting close to the boat a white close to 20' long. Couldn't imagine one that close!
