Derby talk 2014

Three leading shore bass are heavier than boat bass leader.

Lots of albies

Lots of bonita

I need to sneak over. Need to hook up with someone who already has car there.... Need to figure out if I have a contact right in Edgartown.....

mvderby.com their fb page has more updates and pics to get your juices going.

rphud 09-21-2014 06:02 PM

Pick a day. Already told the boss man a severe case of fish pox was looming. I can meet you at the parking lot and take my car over. Was thinking of going it alone anyways if the bones are still in play.

nightfighter 09-24-2014 08:40 PM

New leader in flyrod boat albie at 10.22#

rickhern 09-24-2014 10:06 PM

Snuck over last night to fish the morning bite and got my first ever Bone.

Ross, still have some room for you.

rphud 09-26-2014 06:18 AM

So here it is 26SEP and there are still bones on the beach....wonder what this all means....

Hope they are still on shore next week with some bigger faster brothers.

Sea Dangles 09-26-2014 06:39 AM

My brother got a bone this morning up island.

Torture myself when I see shore guys casting to albies.

I have seen many SUVs with kayaks and fish buggies heading over.... Saw Stripermainiac's truck headed over earlier.

Rick Hern, I will know more middle of next week.

Bob Huddy, I will give you a call

Don't assume that there are no shore Albies just because they are not being weighed in:uhuh:

3 fish limit/derby.

rphud 09-26-2014 02:26 PM

everybody looking for that 16 pounder now?

Last year there were board fish that were under length, this year maybe the same?

Swimmer 09-26-2014 04:25 PM

Ya know, bones push out albies. Bones are faster and more agressive on the bait. When they start slipping away, albies start mixing in and take over.

best case scenario....bones up island and albies down island?

When was the last time that happened?

Renegade6 09-28-2014 04:49 PM

this week

It's easy right? Just show up for a few days, oversleep, walk out onto a crowded fishless jetty and catch a Bone, then head to the other end of the island for a weighable Albie. Nuttin' hard about that.

Except for avoiding being thrown off of said jetty the next time you show your face.

Renegade6 09-28-2014 08:47 PM

Everyone there wanted to kill me. Or hoped I'd be struck dead. Can't blame them. How do you explain dumb luck? Lots of people there with more skill and experience. I just show
up and throw alot

As an aside, Mr. Renegade was lamenting the fact that he had hooked a scup on his favorite epoxy jig until that scup miraculously turned into his first Bonito.

blondterror 10-01-2014 07:44 AM

fished squibby pt last night and ran into Stripermaniac at the top of the tide.... no love for either of us unfortunately... the fishing has slowed way down both hardtails and bass/blues

PaulS 10-01-2014 08:08 AM

Total Bass weighed in are down a lot from last year.

Mary Ann Angelone. I Googled her name because I worked with an Angelone, and I believe she's the widow of a retired secret service agent, and mother of a current one.

The Derby site is having major issues, she is not currently listed as a grand leader, though I'm sure I saw it last night...

Edit: Now it's fixed again...

Her husband passed away while fishing the Derby a few years ago.

Some of the crew arrived and opened the house today. About 4pm SurfPirate and I hopped on the boat and went a mile outside OB Harbor then we turned around…too rough. He is working the filet table this evening…stop by and give him a hard time.

Any idea why there appears to have been an afternoon weigh in today? Shows up on weekly leaders and reports of new bonito leader

The website was down/having problems yesterday and last night

There were long delays because they had to manually enter many of the entries from yesterday after the fact. It took some time for totals to update and catch up

It still wasn't fully functional at this morning's weigh in. Still manually writing down fish when I went in at 8:30. Seems to have caught up and totals are accurate as if this afternoon

Paul and Rick are out hitting it hard at this moment in some heavy wind. Here's hoping they come back with some slobs

PaulS 10-14-2014 12:07 PM

Keeping my fingers crossed for Jim!

Some reflections on this years week at the derby:

Nothing better than seeing kids catch fish! Lenny's son Andrew had his first Albie on his first trip to the Island and my son Anthony and Tony O's nephew Zachary(best buds) had an epic scup derby!

Tony O is a top rod wherever he wets a line.(and his steak tips are remarkable)

Speaking of steak tips, thank you Derek for sharing your culinary expertise.

Ken, Ryan and Jimmy V catching their first 2 albies each.

total of about 40 man-hours in the surf, swimming/skishing, throwing eels all over some great water and we managed 7 bass in a 2 hour slot. Otherwise, the seas were barren.

Yes, Seabass do hit eels.

I went 2 for a zillion on albies, one on an Albie Snax, the other on a stetzko needle. Jim had a load of them but he never switched from his Pink hogy jig. I guess if it ain't broke.......

It's hard to imagine that catching a single 22" bluefish could cause so much anxiety.

Thanks to Jared for showing us one of his secret spots and to John and Bob on the wharf for some great bluefish intel.

BMEUPSCOTTY 10-15-2014 12:25 PM

Looking forward to some pics when it's all over. :btu:

nightfighter 10-15-2014 09:09 PM
