How many of you fall into this "hard core" category
 

I know we have all, and I do mean all, have, at the end of each and every days fishing excursion (especially if we have been skunked) said to ourselves "Just "1" more cast"...

Actually for me I like to give myself at least a fighting chance so I usually state "6" more casts.....

So how many "diehards" do we have out there ?
How many of you know other "diehards" out there ?
So.... how many casts ??

I would not call me hard core anymore, and while hard core compared to many I was never hard core when compared to the hard core anglers I have fished with.

However, I never said one more cast - it was always 10 more casts.

"Hard Headed"

My site name "Hardcore From Shore" says it all. I always take a few more. Then I add a "last cast for bass" maybe several of those too. I usually throw until I am convinced there are no fish in the area and it is them not me or my lures that is the problem. Funny how once in a while even when the water gets skinny or "wrong" a fish does come along.

The real question is: "If you get a strike or fish on your last cast... how many more will you take?"

I've caused a few of my casting partners to talk to themselves over the years. In one instance I announced a last cast - then took the cast into the water my buddy Zeke was fishing - pulled out a 40. He was pissed because he was casting a rebel there for 30 minutes - I threw a Atom Jr and was on as soon as the plug hit the water. I love the last cast - but you have to announce it out loud.

There are times when I look to my side and say to my fishing partner there are no fish here then bang, fish on, only to realize after the fact that I unintentially stopped or slowed down my retrieve to get the hit.

I have had one last cast last 6 hours.

yes...this... I've fished with a broken wrist and cast to my elbow....I've fished with a fractured tibia and a brace from my crotch to my toes when I was supposed to be resting and most recently with a torn MCL..all from a boat so it doesn't count... I've planned to be in bed by 1 Am and went straight to work @ 6AM.. and it's happened more than once... yup heard headed...

Pretty much what JohnR said. I fish hard and often, but not like the guys who swim. But when I know they're are fish around and I have the time, I will fish for double digit hrs in an almost manic state until I find them. I tend to fish like this in June and then again from Sept-Nov. I try to fish smarter now, but I can always justify fishing for hours because there's always a stage of the tide to fish somewhere. Last Sept I fished from dusk til dawn knowing that there were good fish around. When the sun came up I followed the birds and then went looking for bait. Ended up fishing for a total of 16 hrs straight. In the 16th hr I took my first bone, from shore that was just shy of 10 lbs, on a live Mac in RI :happy:

Flip-side is that putting in that much time and not having much success is a horrible downer.

I say ten more, then one for good luck, then one for good measure, then the last cast. If I get a bump, then 20 more cast etc...

Definitely not hardcore. I maximize my time when I can get out but compared to others not even close.

Let me think, does spending 60 minutes to bust through 4 inches of ice to launch my Lund in the Thames in February count?

Was once on the most incredible smallmouth bite the last day of a Maine camping trip, I ran 9 miles to the truck to pull the spare battery, so I could continue use of the trolling motor which I needed to take advantage of a school of 4-5 lbers; all for the last hour of daylight.

Yes I've been that guy.

when fishing from boat for stripers it was 15 minutes at a spot no hits move on....would do my spots in 3-4 hours and head home....can't catch a striper in 15 minutes they R not biting or not there....:)

Now when fishing for mac's from shore I allow 3-4 cast and pack the rod back in truck and leave while others sit there for one more cast which normally last a couple of hrs. with nuten....:)

It's all relative to what is perceived the norm in which group you are spending time with at a given moment. I love to fish. If I can fish more I take the opportunities available.

When I'm fishing I can almost always justify taking a few more casts or hitting another spot on the way back to the truck on maybe even another spot on the drive back home. Doesn't really matter how tired I was during the day or how little sleep I may have gotten recently, once I'm on the rocks I'm full of energy and it's always battle to try and convince myself that it really is time to head home... I also seem to have an easier time calling it a night after a good night than I do after a slow one, especially a skunking, having not caught anything really motivates me to keep fishing and to get back out there the next night and the next after that.

I do a lot of fishing the dawn shift from the kayak and always tell my wife I will be home be at certain time in the morning and then that just gets blown out of the water by about an hour no matter how much leeway I give myself!

One morning long ago (1997) I was fishing Nonquit with my good friend Bobby Vanasse. I had a good fish on and started to have chest pains.
Now I had a heart condition at the time so I always had a vial of Nitro on a chain around my neck so I handed my rod to Bobby, put 2 Nitros under my tongue and landed a 34# bass.

That night I had a massive coronary and was in the hospital for 2 weeks.

Is that hardcore enough?

I think Paul has trumped everyone here and on the east coast with that one

For a five year stretch I'd say between the two of us (Piemma and Rockhound) we missed few nights.... Paul is as hardcore as it gets. How about the night we got to quonnie in the sleet/snow and almost skated down the front of the breachway into the outgoing tide :bl: or the night at the river mouth after the infamous article when it was sideways 40 kts SW and the 10 guys who didn't know the bar were on the sand catching squat while we caught good fish without lights in the washing machine.... :D good times. the one that still sticks out is getting to the top of the steps at SE light on the Friday after Thanksgiving, and having you tell Spence and I 'glad I didn't need my Nitro, had it though....'

It ebbs and flows, for most of us, other priorities take hold. Hard core, everyday surfcasting is a young mans and an old mans game

But if you're an old hardcore, then it trumps all!!!

This fits me well.... So much is determined by life stages, family, and physical ability/health. Look at how life has changed for Luds and Clogston, who not long ago were amongst the hardcore standard bearers of those years. The old timers that Piemma knew years ago on the beaches put in decades... As Rockfish9 Joe likes to say; A good run is better than a bad stand!

I have put in my time and do it for the enjoyment. Period. No way I woud have so much time in if I didn't live 1/8 mile from the water. Started late and haven't had good knees for thirty years, so long treks were never my thing. Never considered wetsuiting. Never wanted to hold others back. The boat is where I can push the envelope. And there are others locally that push it further than I do. For surf fishing, I keep to the local holes I know I can get into and out of easily, and a yearly weekend trip to Cuttyhunk. The only list I can measure up on is the "one more cast" list.......

Yes every season is different but most seasons I am fishing as much as I can. one year I remember going out to the east wall 2.5 weeks after my first back surgery. ..Dr told me to take it easy for 6 weeks...I thought he ment stay out of work for six weeks but go fish when I felt I could...nope fell out there and never healed right ......4 years later 2 weeks before my spinal fusion I had a friend drive me out to the canal 3 hours each way ....I laid in the back seat crying full tears on the way home from that trip.....hard core or plain stupid is in the eye of the beholder iv found out over the years.....now last season flying out to the block and fishing from 7 pm to 7 am and flying back to the main land to head into work was hard core and not dumb...lol..

I was two hours late to my wife's birthday party, at my house, that I'd organized, because the bite picked up just around my originally scheduled quitting time.

The guests were confused and a bit peeved at me. My current wife just rolled with it.

you might be hard core if when you slip into bed your wife says " WHO IS IT"

Not so sure if you can call it hardcore or a sickness.......................I will admit I need help, does that qualify?

Guys who brag about how hard they fish are compensating for something else in their life that is lacking. Probably penis size.

Guys who complain about when people say they are "hardcore" probably have too much time on their hands to worry about such matters.

No need to get upset, Rob. It was just some good natured ball busting. Unless you know something about what those guys are packing in their Fruit of the Looms.

I agree, but when your in your mid 70's it becomes more of an old man's dream. :)
Less chasing fish in the surf, less times out, but still 5 last casts.
