Some thoughts on S-B.com
Facebook is quickly killing this site.....
Seemed to be a consensus during conversation on Cuttyhunk this past weekend. The site has been dead most of this year IMO. I am not gonna be on FB. If you enjoy this site, bring your participation back to where this all began. Or don't complain when this site fades away...... |
Facebook is killing most sites/ I have debated in allowing login from FB to here but whereas this site revolves around fishing, FB revolves around everything. Unsure what to do.
|
I would say FB has little to do with SB.com I am on FB but I dont do anything fishing related on it .. I come here for that .. What I do see is not many people post about their fishing and put up Photos even less .. It is like no one is fishing.. I understand for many different reason
people don't like to post.. and its Summer everyones lives are a bit busy then in the winter |
Don't know John, this site seems to revolve around everything if you ask me! Especially politics! At least we have had some good fishing discussion lately though.
Part of the appeal of FB is that a lot of people are on it and the mobile app is pretty easy to use to post things instantaneously. I am a member of a bunch of fishing groups on FB, but honestly most of the posting is not done to these groups, its just done by an individual who makes it a public, shareable post and who friends anybody who is remotely fishing related. |
At least Larry doesn't post here constantly anymore. Now if we could get rid of dangles we'd be getting somewhere

I hear you!!!!:eyes:

I hope you are wrong Ross but I see the trend too. It would suck if it goes away. Have many great friendships because of this site but people, including I, have so many different directions, options, to go nowadays as far as on line stuff that it is hard to hit them all in one day. I will be here till the end though, I enjoy it here.

We enjoy you Professor!
seriously for the new people starting out they likely don't even think to look in places like this anymore, I know when i started this was one the first places I found! Think about the collective knowledge found in the archives of this site... be a crying shame if nobody called on it anymore. |
Unfortunately we have allowed ourselves to be drawn into the "me, me, me" and "I need instant gratification, like yesterday" age.
Way too many people don't have the patience to actually LEARN to fish, they just expect someone to show they when, where and how at the click of an app, and because they haven't done the work they feel no remorse when they spot burn to the rest of the useless generation of lurking online poachers. Sure I'm cynical, wouldn't you if you found your favorite spots either cleaned out, closed off or inaccessible because of the actions of these internet zeros? |
almost 16 years for me & the whole world has changed big time ................ ut this site for me came at a time I really needed the laughs & friendship on found here .
times change & the internet & cells & all teck stuff has really changed things . I have had some awesome times with people on this site . IMO what helped us bond so well in the early part was the 4 legs & then the TCTFN [ there were some wild times at all ................ they all help people meet people & form ed friendships & many because fishing partners til this day ><.. In the beginning there were 20 -30+ people at the legs /once we lost the legs at weeki & moved to don.s in conn. that one died as more members were coming from the Boston area or North .throw in a few that had kids & things really changed . M&D,s was the last of the legds & when that went & HOOTERS to some of us that cut the personal contract for many .........................personally I would go to the legs to B/s & have some fun & when the guys & gals went fishing I headed home .cape Sam did the same thing @ the ones @ Mikes . Oh the forbidden forum was another plus .I think it keep Zak . on a 24 hour watch ><><> But no matter how long or what I,ll never forget the bonded & laughts that were formed @ the Cutty trips especially [for me] the two I went to @ Greg,s house ....awesome memories & people ><>< |
I come here everyday and see what's going on I don't post much because I don't have alot to share But I really enjoy the site and have also made a great deal of good friends from here
|
JohnR, I don't think you need to link FB to here....
Larry, I would like to see you around here more.... Clammer, those two trip were the very reason why I have continued the Cuttyhunk trips over the last 12 or more years. I would like to see a Leg at M&Ds again.... esp if we could draw out Capesams and Karl.... I would love to see the Political forum moved, to FB or another site. There have been weeks where that has 75% of the attention in here... Scuppers and Grumpy should suffice. Time for members to put up or shut up. Contribute. If you are not part of the solution to ongoing viability, then you are part of the problem. Now is when a conscious decision should be made about your choice of a fishing community to participate in online and in season. You don't realize what you have until it is gone. |
Yeah, I came to the site just before Christmas in 2000. Something got screwed up with my user and I got it fixed in April of 2001.
I knew NOBODY in the Boston area to fish with. I had to drag my brother out to Nahant in 1997. I used to fish there by myself. I knew that I needed some friends that could help me find more spots. My first real friend was the Specialist. He, chrisL, and I went fishing at a couple spots at the Cape in 2001. It was fun. Except for chris. He blew his transmission. Then I figured that I needed to meet more people, cause Billy Mitz and Chris Lane were cool as hell. I got togeher with Don and Greg and had the first TFCTFN. It was also cool as hell. I got very hammered for many years thanks to Portugese moonshine. I will not name names, but will say it was always delivered in a Sierra Mist bottle. So, Facebook is a place to go say hello, or get in touch with somebody, or spot burn, or whatever. It's quick and gets the job done. This site, for me at least, is more of a family. I try to post respectfully and have gotten lots of help learning how to catch the big ones. Not getting hammered before going out was a real plus. This site helped me with that rule, as well. Anyway, just my two cents. And where the hell are Fishpoopoo and bassmaster. They made the site pretty lively. Almost as much as Clammer's pants dropping, but in a better, less naked way. OK. That's me. Love, Rick |

I'm on Facebook and in the last year I am so sickened by the bashing of politicians, religions, and anything else people feel they need to spout off about. I have found that people now think it's there own soap box to get on and rant about everything and make there opinion know which in my case I don't GAF about what you think. I don't use it for fishing either so I'm pretty much all done there.
|
As many have said....you can't put a price on S-B! Made many great friends, learned a crap load not to mention how to build lures! I love it here.....its like an old broken in pair of Levis!!!
Could do with less Niko though.....his feet smell!:) |

Screw facebook...
SB.com seems like the last oasis of decent fishing-related discussion available on the internet. the "other" site is a s@$t show and always has been... i hope people stay active here. I have often had idea for starting new threads for discussions, but always talk myself out of it... i really should just start one the next time i have an idea that i feel will resonate. |

We need more pictures and stories about excellent fish adventures. Who cares if someone kept one for the table. Stop bashing! The new limits along with more people practicing catch and release will bring the biobass back. I for one don't like to post fish pics anymore because someone will say I'm holding wrong or something.:lurk:
|
I love the site, all forums. I think what stops me from posting pics is the fact I am not too bright and have difficulty making it happen. The fb pic posting method makes a dummy seem like a geek.

Not for nothing but this site sees more post and replies in the political forum than anything fishing related & been that way for a few years.

Okay.
I was in the middle of a two week fishing vacation on the cape. I went back to work after a week, fishing from shore sucked ass. I'll save the rest for September, it's a dice roll now, who knows anymore. I am one of the old guys and have met some great people through this site. Keep it going John. FB is good for posting pictures of your breakfast or a nice sunset or two. Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |
Our Connecticut Surfcasters thread on SB under the club area is active but getting a little slow.
Then one guy put up a post. He said that he was embarrassed to say he could not catch a bass on a loaded redfin and that what could he be doing wrong. So he got 20 replies . that started a whole bunch of threads DYFI "Do You Fish it"- everything from do you fish red headed plugs to mag darters to skin plugs to Mambo minnows to Afterhour needles- to jointed plus that woke up the whole thread because guys admitted that some plugs just did not work for them. Some very helpful responses on the main thread a guy asked about Hab's needles a few weeks ago and guys posted lots of responses. Seems no one is making for fishing advice anymore You should try some DYFI threads. |
I am "new" still and I like this site over the rest. I know I may get fewer answers here but the few I get are better than sifting through 100 different Facebook answers which are mostly hearsay.
I am on this site because the CSA uses it for the clubs forum discussion, but I do check the main forum, the plug building forum, and the search function adds a ton of value to my experience here and in the suds. Bass masters thread on fishing a needlefish or this thread on darters are awesome http://www.striped-bass.com/Stripert....php?p=1088838 Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |
Well, I'm still here and I hate FB. I go there only for family stuff. I have not posted fishing pics there and will not name places, times, tides etc.
Now as for SB.com, we have to keep it going but I understand the problem with competition with FB. I think the biggest problem the Boss faces is attracting new blood. The new guys and gals use FB because they have FB. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I haven't seen 10 new names on SB.com in a year. It's all us old bastards. |

I like the chance to PM guys with current Intel or get some intel on whats & where the action is ..seeing most of us are not on the water 7 days a week its a great resource to economize and make that 1 trip of the week if thats all you can do a success :claps: rather than :fury: |
If you are fishing then your day is already successful.

Don't have FB, won't join FB. Keep it. When I want to talk fishing I want to talk to anglers, not clueless folks I'm hoping to impress.

If you want more pics etc: up the limit size on pics and allow videos direct....mine all go to FB or YouTube. I don't really give a rats ass about someone's "bad" comments on a kept legal fish, I like eating fish of all kinds, and yes even stripers once in a while. My total striper catch this year = 1 !
|
I think the striped bass decline that happened around 2006 purged a lot of people from fishing frequently in the surf at least and that is one reason why the site isn't like it usta was.. But I still love this place!

I've never joined FB because it just seems too time consuming, but I've been here for 14 years. I don't post much and mostly not fishing related, because I don't feel I'm of the caliber of many here; like Yogi Berra said, "What can I say that hasn't already been said before," and I'm not going to post just to hear the sound of my own e-voice But I'm here most every day, probably giving the impression of being a lurker, but in reality a learner, because of the wealth and variety of intelligent posts on many subjects, both fishing and non-fishing. I've been to a few TFCTF's and wish I could have been at them all (and with a little more confidence in my abilities joined a "leg" or three). And I've met a number of folks face to face, but also interact with many I only know online, all great people, full of sage advice, caring and often humor. And it's all monitored so things don't get out of hand. What wouldn't one like about this site? When I see a "Keeping The Lights On" post I contribute in some manner (John, hope my last donation made it to the Linesider PO box or I'll send another). I'm proud to have the decal on my truck and I only wear my S-B hat (anyone still have them?) on special occasions.
Well, another reason I hesitate to post is I can ramble on a bit and lose focus (duhhhh!), but my point is I don't need or want something else. S-B.com is just the thing for me, the only thing for me. I'd be quite lost without this site, but it still wouldn't make me join FB or any other social media or fishing site. |

I also think information is so readily available on FB that a lot of these new age fisherman see no point in coming here. All they need is a real time pic and off they go. Drives me insane - no one reads, logs, skunks, etc because they can find where the fish are without actually putting in any work. I'm one of the younger members on here, but I respect the people on here and I will always be appreciative of the friendships I've made because of this site. I've also learned more from this site than probably anywhere else. I will always come to this site, because like someone stated earlier, real fishing conversations take place here. I also think that this site has the greatest concentration of highly skilled anglers anywhere. Again, I'll always be here... |
No Cutty, Plugfest or Too Cold on FB. Would be nice to have a few legs again. Started some conversations about the Block leg coming back from Cutty.
Maybe I will start a new thread for leg suggestions and potential participation and see where that goes. Might be a little late for a Spring leg unless we do the North shore. Wonder how much traffic is on the club pages v the main pages? |
No face book for me.. I don't know much about it nor do I care to know... my issue is time management... the older I get the more precious it becomes........If I didn't surf the web on my breaks and while waiting for phone calls... I'd never go "on line" ...I enjoy my time on SB because most here share a common thing.. the love for striped bass.. this is one of the few places those people come together.... all my life I've enjoyed learning from the "elders' about fishing and life in general..SB.com can and is such a learning place for future generations.. at 61.. I've reached or am approaching that stage myself... the "teachers " of our youth are slowly fading away...leaving us older folks to carry on.. today will be the good old days for our children...tomorrow will leave our grandchildren wondering what happened to the "good old days" their parents enjoyed...only the rocks live forever...
