Block after Thanksgiving

Anyone thinking about it?

Rob Rockcrawler 10-27-2018 06:12 PM

Thought about it many times this year included. Can’t do it with the chaos at work but it would be great.

Probably right....

Rob Rockcrawler 10-28-2018 06:24 AM

I have a feeling your correct. I was out there for a couple years the week before thanksgiving it was a slow cold grind.

No way unless the trend changes.

bobber 10-28-2018 11:59 AM

its a big gamble. the numbers of fish are wayyy down- probably not worth the effort. the late run of fish chasing herring down the coast is likely a thing of the past

Dennis, I believe the days of the late big fish are just in our memories now. I was just wondering if anyone was up for it but it really is kind of stupid of me given the results I am hearing of late.

We'll used to catch large at plum island (Mass)well into November. .we used to call it a season when we caught more codfish than bass on plugs wire lined in the mouth of the river...like you said a distant memory. ..I haven't seen a large fish since the second week of September. .the ocean conditions and water clarity played a role, but weather conditions were not the only factor.

How many times did you guys con me into fishing Block Island late in the season? Just Oakley dropping all my fish in the wash and freezing our asses off. Thank god for lasagne and bourbon.

Great memories Jeff. Some of the most memorable fishing trips I even had.

ivanputski 10-29-2018 07:03 AM

I suspect that the small push of huge fish that potentially move through Block after thanksgiving is a decades old pattern that rarely ever happens anymore... but hey... Never know unless you're there with a line in the water! if I had the free time and less BS to do daily, I would take a shot

Yes. IF I lived out there you can bet your ass I'd be casting every evening for a few hours seeing if I could intercept something nice. But I wouldn't plan a special trip out there during Thanksgiving UNLESS I had some active intell.

Piemma, I'll be there during the first week of Nov - if things look encouraging I'll let you know.

rphud 10-29-2018 09:40 AM

could be the year, just need some early snow

We'll if it happened again there is a good chance I'd be all by my lonesome. I think last November I ran into two other fishermen for an entire week of casting.

You can't catch stripers in the snow silly

patabate 10-29-2018 02:13 PM

I'll be out there with the family for most of the week. At least I know the clams will be there.

When Pat? I'll be there from 11/4 - 11/11

I have a guy where I stay who trades me clams for my linguine in exchange for striper fillets.
Last few years it's been hard to provide my end of the deal.

patabate 10-29-2018 11:02 PM

Dennis, I'm going up on the 20th thru 26th. I did well on clams there last month, though all quohogs.

I'll be arriving at 9am or so on the 4th. I drive a bluish Subaru Forester with rod racks. Look up Hank Hewitt at Block Island Fishworks for a report if you want to wet a line in the surf. He also does boat charters.

Thanks Dennis . Was very dangerous surf over the weekend , Tried Friday night to no avail . Was nonexistant around the island with all the rough water . Saturday didnt fish at all and Sunday was family day . I saw you driving past the 1661 after you got off ferry . Was a great family weekend without much fishing . We had a blast !
Good luck thos week

Eben
Found an orb after just 10 minutes of searching at Rodmans Hollow . #257 2018 behind stone sign at trail intersection . It will be registered .
It is an awesome project ! Everyone in my group (7) were looking everywhere we went . Everyone was so into looking for them . Got a couple people out looking who may never have walked the island before . Even I went on trails I never knew of . Most people staying at the 1661 were out looking for them . At the end of the day notes were shared with each other . Was an awesome time !
Thank You

My daughters talked to a Lady in the red , right, return . She was very informative and very nice . They enjoyed chatting with her .

The real question is what happened to the runs of big sand eels that brought the bass to the block in November? Dennis when you go to block do you see sand eels or are they gone like the bass?

piemma 11-06-2018 03:34 AM

I haven't seen the big sand eels on the Block in more than 10 or 12 years.

That’s awesome !! Honestly, I did not have much hope for you in finding one. The last batch was hidden on Columbus Day weekend.
That was Judy at red right return. She is one of the nicest, coolest people I know out there.

I still haven't found one of the orbs. Eben you need to make glass plugs and hide them in the wrack line so I can find one ;)

Sand eels on Block are generally not always noticeable. When you see them washed up there is generally a reason. Plenty of small fish out here so there is some kind of bait present.

Looks like the report says it all. It is the same everywhere. Lots of small fish.

2 years of Canal slaughter and EEZ abuse along with the biomass sitting in the SW Ledge during the Summer may have something to do with it.
There have been a few decent fish in NJ and Maryland. Not so much on LI. That's what my pipeline has been telling me.

Pete F. 11-06-2018 01:54 PM

I wouldn't feel it's necessary to go to Block right now.
With this moon I'd be parking by a tennis court at 11pm and fishing in the river till the tide flooded the bar.

I am not even a local but know where you are talking about...you may end up with a zombie apocalypse of casters.....hahaha..if anyone still reads these forums.

Another reason to hit block instead. No one there...and so much nicer than battling zombies.

If they were where I was looking I would have found one . We looked under everything in every tree around and in the walls . It was a lot of fun went to places on the island that dont have fish . Thats only the 2nd time I have done that . Even had 2 50+ mothers searching with enthusiasm !
My daughter and I are going back in the spring so she can have one . I gave mine to my daughter who is getting married at the end of the month , So she can remember the special weekend at the block .

Thank You

Chris , Alex , Jess and Patty
