More Pussification of America

OOOh it's flurries of snow! OOh it's covered my windshield. OOh it is 34 degrees, but is going to freeze up later tonight.... Let's close the schools! What utter BS. It is 0810 in the morning and not a plow blade has been dropped locally. Salt has been put out. Just reinforcing another generation's soft underbelly by accepting a reason not to go to work...

(note; I am in Marblehead, on North Shore of Boston. A town surrounded on three sides by water.... The forecast is to be above freezing temperatures for most of the day! I am sure it is piling up just a few miles inland, but it is not here!!!)

Can you imagine if the internet suddenly ceased to exist, OMG the youth of America would be lost forever, depression and suicide would skyrocket; I fear it's not a world I'd like to live in decades from now. Mother nature will solve that for me, unless the come up with a pill to prolong life and I'm pretty sure if they did, I'm not taking one.

“Out of an abundance of caution” - any time the cancelation notice says that, you know what they really mean is “so we can avoid lawsuits, we are gonna cancel even though we don’t think we should”

OOOH Here is a pic from my desk of the winter storm outside.... Note that the road was cleared with salt and above freezing temperatures... Not a single plow! But that is reason enough to shut down and reinforce our future generations that they don't need to really go to work today because the world is such a scary place....BS!

Exactly. So why wouldn't they canc? If there was a bus accident the Super. would be reamed.

nightfighter 02-28-2023 09:32 AM

Come on, Paul. Did you just relocate from the South? This is New England. People ski and do things outdoors in the winter months. Can you sue a grocery chain if you get into an accident going to get your groceries? Your argument could be extrapolated to closing down the state when it rains due to the risk of hydroplaning.... Is that really your view of how our society should be controlled or "protected"? These kids (and many of their young parents) need someone to give them a kick in the azz and tell them to get up, pull on their pants, and get going. The day is wasting away. That is how the country got to being what it once was and admired for.

So if a bus gets in an accident after sliding on the snow is the super going to be praised for preventing the "pussification" of America?

nightfighter 02-28-2023 09:52 AM

Paul, there is no snow. The local forecast was for 1-3" in this town. Temps were to be above freezing. The risk was not there. Lawyers and insurance companies have scared people from doing what they want and need to be doing. Stop pushing this fear of what if? You have now lived into your sixties (I believe) and you are still here... despite taking the risk of wetsuiting out to various rocks at night. THAT can be construed to being much more risky than putting kids on a school bus HERE this morning.

PaulS 02-28-2023 09:58 AM

It is not my risk it is the risk to the super if he is wrong. If the temps. dropped and there was snow/ice and an accident the next board of ed meeting would have had 50 angry parents yelling about the super. There is no upside for him to take the chance. If he didn't canc. school today would anyone show up at the next BOD meeting to praise him?

nightfighter 02-28-2023 10:04 AM

It is not about getting praise. It is about making a correct decision with the information available. Not about what ifs and will I get sued? Your point of view is what has us, as a country, in this spiral downward, IMO.

I am going to leave this thread now as it is feeling like another forum that used to be here and I am happy to see it gone.

It is funny bc I was going to post that I thought the downward spiral was when people complain about political forums that they don't participate in but still feel the need to complain about. I didn't press send but......

Ross, I agree but it depends where you are. Still snowing here and we have about 8" so far. Nothing to cancel school for, especially in Burrillville, where we get more snow than anywhere in RI. But they did cancel.
My wife taught in town for 35 years and they never cancelled for less than a foot or more.

The Dad Fisherman 02-28-2023 01:44 PM

Georgetown only had a 2 hour delay, and we have more snow than Marblehead. Facebook will blowup with parents bitching that they should have cancelled like everywhere else.

Meh
We started that way last night (2hr delay). Superintendent cancelled this morning with 4" on the ground and still coming. Probably had 6" before the rain change at 1030. They might have been find with the two hour delay, but at least down here I think the timing of the storm is what made it an issue; had the snow stopped at 3am they probably would have plowed and had a 1hr delay.

I’m with you Ross,,, it’s a joke… although I am glad to see our forecaster back…. ;-)
