GPS/Sonar advice requested

I have a Lowrance LMS160 Sonar/GPS unit on my 19' center console. and I've been wanting to get a new color unit for my boat.

So, I was thinking about trying to move the LMS160 from my boat to my kayak (OK Prowler 15 Angler), and getting a new unit for my center console. However, the LMS has an external antenna (the "puck"), and would require a 12 volt battery.

Am I crazy? Or is this worth doing? (I'm new to the yak world, so opinions would be appreciated).

Ask over on NEKF, as there are more there who have done the monster kayak thing.

I consider it a must have, knowing the changes in water depth is key, like yesterday where the fish were holding on a shelf, and I would never have known it was there without the depth finder, and the GPS is sweet, marked my drift and repeated it several times, plus the safety factor for when the fog rolls in, it is sweet.
I run a 12 volt battery on my kayak. It is the one that looks like a brick. I got mine at radio shack for like 25 bucks. Picked up a trickle charger from sears for short money as well. I spent about 8 hrs yesterday with it and barely put a dent in the charge. I run a color GPS/Fishfinder and compass with back lighting...good luck

I use the same battery on mine. Purchased it from Cabela's with charger. You will have plenty of juice to run your unit. Like Angluh said, the depthfinder is definately worth having aboard the yak. Not sure how to help you regarding the puck though.

fishfinder installation

Thanks for the info everyone. Upon further research it looks like I can mount my 160 on the kayak with a little creativity. I'd prefer to have a combo (Sonar/GPS) unit even if it does require a 12-volt battery rather than AAs.

There is a good website that shows some various installation approaches if anyone is interested.
