Advice on what to target. Tog or fluke?

Curious question. Will be going out on a friends boat in long island sound out of Norwalk CT on Sat Oct 13. What would you guys recommend targeting in that area at that time of year? Tog or fluke? Try both, hit a shallow rock pile for tog and then a deep drop off for fluke? Should we go for scup as a backup plan (will have my 6 year old with us)

Thanks!

How about on the tog grounds fish some rods with jig and squid and others with the crabs.....enjoy the day

I think it's still early for tog, and it's getting late for fluke but I would choose that between the 2.
Yes on the scup with a 6 y.o. - definitely.
Bring some jigs for sea bass in case the fluke don't hit - hit some deep rockpiles.

Fluke should be gone already, fish for tog and/or scup.

Tog off the wall up my way today.... went thru an almost full bucket of greenies

Wow, thanks for the advice! Great suggestions. We'll head out with green crabs, fluke rigs and sea worms for scup!

Gotta give the tog a try. Will try to find a fluke while togging at the same time.

I can remember trolling up fluke on rebels/swimmers in derby sound and between gay head and squibby during the derby even in October. I'm quite a bit south so hope there are still some down here. I hear that the LI sound doesn't tend to be all that good for them though.

Scup wil be a great backup!

Thanks!

If you want to catch scup, use clams. Much better bait and cheaper than sea worms. Tog will also take a piece of clam, but at this time of year the sup and cunners will usually beat the tog to the bait.

Thanks Mike! Will buy clams instead of worms but also some green crabs!

F/o squid also great for scup & sea bass . Tautog picked up descent the last week ><

Getting psyched. Reading to tog, catch some scup, a seabass or two. Can't wait. What do the experts recommend for terminal gear? I remember, wait for the second hit before setting the hook. It's been so long. Any advice for teaching/helping a 6 year old how to catch a tog?

sent you a PM. I have taken 3 or 4 newbies out this year and they have all been able to catch keeper tog. One of them caught a 10 pounder on his first trip out.

Cool Beans, just got home from work. Unbelieveable! Thank you for the detailed thought out PM! You are awesome my man! I owe you one!

Happy to help. I hope you do as well as I have so far this year.

So we had the best day on the water. Started late due to the rain and fished a slid 5 hours. Move about 4 times looking for a good rock pile and never found the tog. My son caught a half doaen big scup that we'll have in a fish chowder and the friends that took us out caught a nice sea bass that will go intwith it. Really wanted a tog but we never saw one. I was convinced I had a 15 pounder on the last drop of the day when up came a belly hooked dog fish. My son couldn't believe "Dad caught a shark!". :-) Such fun. Thanks for the help all!
