Swallowing Some Serious Pride Today

Come into work today and I have a Meeting request from the Boss...wants to have the department get together for a lunch meeting and "Brainstorm" everything that could possibly go wrong with the Outsourcing move...you know....the one that is eliminating my job.

and now he comes down and says he doesn't have time to go get the food....can I go pick it up  WTF is this guy thinking.

Its like asking me to show the firing squad how to Load there guns a few days before my execution....and then making me go and pick up my Last Meal. :wall:

EarnedStripes44 07-03-2008 11:04 AM

Well you make sure you throw in your 2 cents at that lunch meeting like 10,000 stack of 20s at a casino, and bet on the company's failure.

Clogston29 07-03-2008 11:05 AM

there is definately a time to say "no", if not "%$%$%$%$ you", and your boss presented it to you

JohnR 07-03-2008 11:06 AM

I've been in your shoes before so keep in mind you will probably have the last laugh. You will probably get a better job and they will probably get effed up for an extended period of time.

You will also be able to clear your head in ways you'd never imagine as the Oh Dark nights transition into the first spatter of light in the morning while you are out fishing (and as you take on a Grizzly Adams like appearance between interviews).

fishsmith 07-03-2008 11:07 AM

Say NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Outsourcing was a big concern here, but we're co-existing.

The biggest problem we have is no sooner do we have an offshore rep trained, they leave for another opportunity, then you start the training all over again.

The Dad Fisherman 07-03-2008 11:19 AM

He knows I need him for a reference.....thats is why I'm swallowing the pride...plus the fact I still want to get paid through the end of the month.

Joe 07-03-2008 11:27 AM

Every day you hold onto your job the recession gets shorter. Given the choice of being s-canned now or later, the smart guy chooses later.

Backbeach Jake 07-03-2008 11:27 AM

Buy weird foods that only you like.

eastendlu 07-03-2008 11:37 AM

Make sure the food includes hot peppers and anchovies.

fishsmith 07-03-2008 11:59 AM

if the offshore staff is there, bring hamburgers and steaktips :jester:

Depending on whether you are the ONLY one losing your job, I would get decent food for those that are getting the boot, and get crappy mini-mart food for the boss. You know, a microwave burrito, a warm yoohoo and some crappy, outdated "hot" peanuts for the boss and maybe a "clambake" lunch for the real working stiffs.

or spit in the food and dont partake in the eating .

Rockport24 07-03-2008 03:59 PM

dude that totally sucks! I hear ya though, ya gotta do what ya gotta do. What a stupid ass your boss must be, of course all of you are going to say that the outsourcing is gonna be a chitstorm and is going to eff up the company and try to come up with every little problem with it. How does he expect you to give solid rational advice? what a #^&#^&#^&#^&!
I agree with John R., you're prob going to end up better off after this whole deal. My buddy got laid off (well, fired really) and he's now moving closer to his family and friends and getting paid a lot more.

BigFish 07-03-2008 04:06 PM

"F" Them! I would have told him to shii'te in his fist!:tooth:

spence 07-03-2008 04:23 PM

Take the high road, the business world is a much smaller community than anyone would ever imagine. The new boss at your much better job might just be friends with the dork who's asking you to get the food.

Jenn 07-03-2008 05:08 PM

Wait a minute...youre getting the boot and he's asking you to pick up his food? Dude thats a no brainer right there. You dont even have to actually sabatoge the food.....just sit there and sheepishly smile at him and ask how it is once he's at least half way through eating....it should make him think twice....

striperman36 07-03-2008 06:19 PM

as Spence says in any profession it is a seriously small world. I am still working with people, many employers later, that I started with 25 years ago when I first moved up here from South Jersey.

I also agree you have an opportunity to find a seriously better role with a better set of circumstances. Recession or not, Mass has one of the most stable employment figures in the nation.

I always do....I WILL leave with my self-respect in tact.

And the IT community is probably one of the smallest, I always seem to cross paths with people in this field

Striperknight 07-05-2008 04:52 PM

Yea your boss and company will get what they deserve with outsourcing. It does not work. Stay professional and start looking for a job. Don't hang out to train your replacement.

spence 07-05-2008 04:54 PM

I think some outsourcing has been very successful, but there are so many risks and I've seen many companies really struggle to maintain the same level of productivity. For services and such, you really have to have a strong presence over there. Otherwise it can be very difficult to communicate intent.

Hate to be the guy who suggests doing nasty stuff to the food.I'd reach down in the tighty whiteys and grab a handful or two of curly's and sprinkle them over the entire thing.Screw that boss with his head so far up his own rectum he can't see what he's doing.Felt good saying that but..........Couldn't really do it.Could you ?I'd probably do what Jenn suggested after explaining in a round about way your position on the whole thing while it's unfolding.

striperchaser02 07-07-2008 08:15 PM

i would do more spit in the food lol
Peace
Henry:nailem:
I will say a prayer for you

whiplash 07-08-2008 08:49 AM

Do up some business cards for IT consulting and hand them to you boss as you leave. You never know he may need some help pretty soon.

Backbeach Jake 07-14-2008 04:37 PM

I had to come back to this to say that you swallowed no pride in that incident, in fact you wore it proudly. I'm impressed and I'll remember that when I'm handed a similar deal. Good for you. A man leaves with his head up not sneering over his shoulder.:claps:

Flaptail 07-14-2008 07:18 PM

Do it and go out with class, which he obvioulsy does not recognize. You can listen to all the advice posted here, yeah it would be easy to tell him to f()ck off and get a moments satisfaction but that kind of sh!t gets you nowhere in the long run, every bridge you burn always somehow comes back to haunt you, it's a remarkably small world.

Show the others your the class act.

gone fishin 07-14-2008 09:56 PM

DF it really sucks to have this happen. Leave with the class you have. You are right, it really is a small world and his reference can really make a difference at your next yob.

The fish are usually at 4.5-5 in Sept. See you on the beach.

vanstaal 07-15-2008 04:59 AM

Another Hallmark Moment..

afterhours 07-15-2008 06:06 AM

good for you kevin- you showed class. you're a better man than me, there are two things a man does'nt swallow in my book and pride is #2....

BigFish 07-15-2008 06:37 AM

Class? Dignity? Maybe......but I would still have told him to shiiit in his fist! What do you have to lose??? Class? Dignity? Maybe......but what a way to go!:hihi:

The Dad Fisherman 07-15-2008 07:54 AM

Don't worry Kharma bit him in the A$$ the very next day...the entire citrix environment went down, on the 4th of July. Called me up and started begging. I said I'm spending the day with my family, sorry. I'll come by on Saturday and point you in the right direction (both servers needed to be rebuilt). I Came in and got him started. Then left.

Later since I was going by the office that night to go fishing and noticed the lights still on, I popped in and he was still chugging away.

I asked him how that "Learning Curve" was working out for him. Gave him a few more pointers...and went on my way.

Bottom line was that everything was back up and running on Monday, I helped him where he needed it....and HE got to spend the long weekend in the server room, Not me....and the owner thanked me for helping him out :D

Kharma's a Bitch
