Very Cool.. and welcome to SB!
Hey.. that reel.. got a friend of mine who has one of them big Aussie reels on a 13 foot surf rod, he brings it around once in a while.... I can't recall the name, but it is wicked pissah! (uh, that's a good thing, trust me.. local saying) any chance of showing us a close up of that reel and telling us a bit about it. Cliff casting.. Love it! :kewl: |
I think I could deal w/those cliff issues in my kayak.....
Any nearby kayak launches? |
Awsome Pics Stax! The cliff thing??? I don't know about me hanging off the side like that... :uhoh: But the fishes you catch may just fix the height issue :bounce:
Welcome to SB... Keep them Pics coming... Good day Mate. Australia is beautiful, love to see it sometime... :tm: |
Road trip anyone?

These a picture of the "ALVEY" sidecast fishing reel we use off the cliffs. It has a line capacity of 1000 yards of mono 30lb line. If you loose a 100 yards it makes no difference at all. They are not to shabby at casting as well. It has a 1:1 retrive and is strong as an Ox.
http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/9424/alveyes9.jpg Justplugit. Here is a web shot of the type of lures we use, this is only one of the brands, there are hundreds of brands, hundreds of sizes and colours, some cheap ($5-$6) and the Repala's are $15-$20. http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/6610/repalain8.jpg Here is Kerren with a "small" black tip reef shark. Notice the black abyss behind him! http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/6262/kshark1el6.gif This is a shot of Steep Point from the air. You can clearly see the faultline that seperates the bay from the darker water. We fish from the Ovens where the water is about 80 feet deep at your feet. The schools of fish (Narrowbanded and Yellowfin Tuna) swim down the coast, from the left of this picture, in the deep water. As they approach the faultline they swin across the bay and end up at Steep Point. This large deep bay is also one of the major spots were the baitfish get caught and herded to. Once there the large, sometimes schools of Tuna, literally make the whole bay boil. You could cast your cellphone out there and catch a Tuna! http://img378.imageshack.us/img378/5...elsteepbq2.jpg So, what do you think of our hidden treasure? Stax |
Stax, that is way cool stuff my man, way cool. So bibbed means lipped, I guess I learned some Australian today. Neat!
That Saamson fish was neat, looked like it would fight hard and probably take a surface plug. Also that Mulloway looks like a white sea bass as found off of our west coast and down Baja. Sea trout (actually the croaker family of fishes) like our Squeteaque and Spotted Weakish, in that family. You guys get Tailor down there which we know as Bluefish correct? Got to be a bitch getting those critters up that cliff. Not much for a live release. The Alveys really cast when you can adjust the spool to face forward. Guys use them out west for salmon. Well, welcome aboard, that really cool stuff and looks like lonely country out that way. Drop a cold one for us mate! |
  :eek5:
hunni can we go to austailia:bounce: |
paradice!

Great to see how the rest of the world fishes!! Great Shots!!

sell'n the boats, goin down under.
Link:eyes: |
Here is a picture of a Tailor caught with my very first cast with the new BG10000 and my ABU Suflex rod, the rod is 25 years old.
You mentioned the word "crocker" and yes the Mulloway is in that family. They get up to about 90Lbs. Not the greatest fighting fish and an even worst eating fish. Like eating cardboard boxes!! http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/4772/tailorsj8.jpg Is one is taken from the beach about 5 miles from Steep Point at Sheltered Bay. Fishing extra light takle, 4lb line, for bait. John here has a Tailor about 8lb trying to make a dash for freedom. Soon Stax http://img368.imageshack.us/img368/4195/buff3kf0.jpg |
Stax, i read where peak time for catching those Tailors (bluefish) is January and February.
We have a guy on our site who loves to catch them and would probably fly over to catch them in our off season. You may not of heard of "Clammer" yet, but you will. :hihi: |
ok.... he's makeing it look too easy.....
if it real is that easy why cann't we get the same here:( |

Gday all!
My name is Marc Russo, Im from Perth Western Australia and stax put link up on our steep point site so i though i would share some of my pics with ya ;) One pic in particular with amaize you. I was only 17yrs and i hooked , fought and landed a 100pound sailfish from the cliff. Its just about impossible to achive this and me bieng 17yrs old was even more special. Its pretty easy to land sailfish from the back of a boat, just whack it in reverse and reel it in. Try catching the fastest fish in the ocean on 50pound line off a cliff! haha It was fun! 1 big regret is not releasing this great fish, by the time we got the fish to the base of the cliffs it was had it and hooked in the eye. I allways release fish now and only take enough for a feed and only take what we need. Here is the pics http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/928...tmoment8bf.jpg http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/4371/sailfishfq2.jpg http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/3027/saily0ti.jpg |
Some more pics for ya, you can get a idea on how high some parts of the cliffs are,
http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/4393/16bc2.jpg http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/9347/29as.jpg |
Unfortunatly alot of our fish come up like this due to bieng attacked by sharks lol.
This is my uncle Nino with what would of been a monster mackeral. http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/7729/38fq1.jpg |
Some of the fish that are caught there are amaising!
This fish was released unharmed, such beautiful colours. http://i6.tinypic.com/24c84ms.jpg |
Last show off pic from now .....

Welcome Tailor Marc!
Very cool stuff.. Keep them coming.. :beat: Now! that looks more like height that I like to fish from... hehehe |
This is a pic overlooking "The ovens" this is where Stax was explaining where its 80ft deep strait off the edge of the cliff .
They call it "The oven" because not much of a breeze gets in there and iv heard it can get upto 50-60 degries c ! (not sure what that is in farenhieght) http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/7218/1100sp4.jpg http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/99/15xm8.jpg |
Jeez...

Do your bluefish have a reputation of biting a careless fishermans fingers and making them bleed? Nice set of teeth "tailor" have |

Hey question for you - how do you release a fish from 100 feet / 33M in the air?? Thanks & great pics! |
Quote:
Well most of the smaller fish we through back do acually swim off fine but when i said release fish after we caught enough i ment fishing in general like down here in perth off our beaches etc:) Its really good watching alot of people releasing fish in australia now. Everyone now realises that we cant take everything we catch. We have to fish for the future and take only what we need :) |
That is crazy! Beautiful pictures, awesome scenery, great fish. what more can I say?
(in the voice of Eric Cartman begging him mom for something) ... "John R can we go to the land down under for the class field trip this year??" |
Here is a pic of me fishn off the really high part behind the steep point sign.

I'll tell you - impressive stuff and a lot different than what we have here in the Northeast USA. Though we do have bluefish / tailors, ours can get to 7-9 kilos and occasionally bigger though I've hear your's can push 12-13 kilos.
Our sharks and tuna come from boat though one adventurous souls is going to land a Giant from the Canal some day :hihi: Most of us surf fishing for bigger fish - targetting 20-50# (10-25 kilo) Stripers, do so at night as these fish are much more nocturnal when along the shore. From boat it's around the clock... Other than the standup gear on 10 rods  and Alveys, we use a lot of similar equipment from Abu conventionals (multipliers) to VS spinners and such... Cool stuff. Oh, and little pressure Damn, whaddya think folks? Road Trip? :humpty:  :buds: |
