salt the herring while the herring are still whole. this will tuffen them up.

herring yummmm

Put them on ice. Make sure your hooks aren't that thick and have good barbs, gama's are good. Don't cast too hard or they will fly off. This usually works for me. Although I tend to be too lazy to ice them and if they are fresh herring they turn into mashed taters:) good luck....

try to by fresh bait...frozen bait SUCKS and when it thaws it is soft and squishy.

hook them in the backbone, and use a smaller hook maybe.

use a bigger chunk... casts further and sew it on a bit...

They can't be attached in RI, CT, or MA - Unless it is Sea Herring

ive never fished with river herring... that i know of.
how can you tell the difference?

Rick Ackley 08-23-2006 07:12 PM

herring..

hook,
skip the herring, use anything else for chunk bait. And yes, the squid wholes are still working, big circle hooks thru the mantle with a wired stinger rigged right in front of the tentacles.
This will yield less bottom fish hook ups. If your fishing from a boat, let this out with a few colors of leadcore into the rip line. Hold the rod, no dead stickin with this set up. Enjoy.

Hooking Herring

When you want to hook a herring chunk pull the hook just under the backbone and then around it again. Make a loop over the backbone.
This works the best.

This works the best.

Keep in mind that use of Alewive or Blueback Herring is prohibited in Mass, RI, & CT at this time. Atlantic herring is available

Yea, bro. Squid is not a bad bet. It last forever and you can cast a nice sized chunk almost a mile. The only thing that sucks about squid is that they are skate candy.
