Tuna $$$$

I was looking at market price for tuna the other day and was wondering if the daily market price changes alot? Does anyone know what the price per pound last week tuna was, if you sold a fish at the dock?

keeperreaper 06-12-2011 04:27 PM

It is based on the quality of each individual fish for Bluefin. It has a lot to due with color, fat content, shape, condition of fish (was it scorched) etc. Yellowfin on the other hand ...

Raider Ronnie 06-12-2011 04:48 PM

A lot also has to do with supply & demand also

srt44116 06-12-2011 05:04 PM

Ya I new that it was based on the quality of fish. Supply and demand? Does it really change that much ?

Yeah, the price has sucked the last few years.....

Also depends on Yen/Dollar exchange rate. You sell the fish in Yen and then it converts back to Dollars - this is the one instance where a weak Dollar vs the Yen is a good thing.

And maybe if my father wasn't booked up with Bass charters every freaking day I could go find this out for myself...

I'm going to have to turn into a freaking boat ho' this summer too.

Last year the bigger money was in Mahi, not tuna. (well, the price for Bigeye was also good last year) When selling YFtuna the dealers saw a few mahi on board and he wanted them a lot more than the tuna. One guy said...go back out and catch a boatload of mahi, I will take every one and pay top dollar. (It was ridiculous) I may try that this year.

We always stop and hit the Mahi's to help the fuel fund for the trip. Every little bit helps and there fun on light tackle.

Us too. Often times we would bring a blue tarp with milk jugs and plastic poles. Pole out tarp, float it with milk jugs, mark it, go troll around, then come back in an hour and it would be LOADED with Mahi. The colors of them when they come out of the water are miraculous.
when done, pick up tarp and stow away

Im headed down to the canyons tomorrow for an overnighter. Lets hope the yft are paying more than last year.

Damn, Thats a great idea!!!! We usually back up to a high flyer and toss out a few butterfish chunks....

That is very popular in other parts of the world. You can also use newspaper and lay the sheets together. If you go the tarp route stick a reflector in it so you can find it using radar if you are going to be away from it for a few hours.

can't wait to hear about the trip!

buckman 06-24-2011 06:21 AM

We got $6 and $7 for our last 2 fish. These were boated quick, properly cared for and iced.
Very few fish around these parts have the proper fat and oil to go overseas right now. We won't see good fish for another 6 weeks or more.
However there are a few, as Mark's fish took a plane ride.

keeperreaper 06-24-2011 07:01 AM

A few more fish went for a plane ride earlier in the week. The best prices are fall herring fattened fish. October/November fish have high fat and oil content due to the forage of the summer. They also have the aestectic shape they look for as well as the coloring. Best thing to do if you fight a fish for a while is swim back to color. A hot discolored fish = cat food.
