Commercial fish 65"?

I heard for the first time last night that there is some talk about trying to reduce the commercial size on Bluefin to 65". It seems that if the quoto doesn't get filled then we lose it to Canada.

This seems fair? Not!!

I couldn't go to the Green Harbor meeting tonight but I beleive the NMFS was going to speak about this? Did anyone make it to the meeting?

It is still 73". It was tabled earlier but never went anywhere. The quota is a use or lose it scenario. The US as a whole is a poor performer in this area. 2011 should be interesting in terms of the quota.

What they would like to change from what I gather is: allow (1) 65" and (2) 73 to 81 and unlimited over 81" for Harpoon. For General ,1, 65" or (3) over 73"

The fear is, that it's a use or lose qouta and what the U.S. doesn't use we can lose to other countries, I think we only used about 50% last year.

In reality, all it would do,is lower our quota, without affecting any other countries,as the USA is the only country following ICCAT's guidelines anyways. It's a bad joke.

I think the idea behind the changes is to raise our catch closer to what our quota is so we do not lose that unused portion to countries that do not have the same stringent size restrictions or catch and farm smaller fish.
