weakfish

Are in some old CT haunts where I haven't seen them in a few years. Nothing over 5 pounds, but nice to see them again. My son and I got 3 while looking for schoolies, using soft plastics. Haven't caught one on at least 5 years.

Nice to hear. Catching one up here on the cape would make my season.

I lost one a few years ago right around this time of year in soco, hit a darter in white water. I was getting into a lot of small keeper bass and figured that is what i had on the line until i saw it about 10 feet away as the hook pulled. Of all the fish in the area that is the one i want to land the most.

About the right time of year for them to show up off of westhaven beaches.

Made a point of targeting them this year after having not caught one in probaby 20 years. Skunked the first attempt but landed three small ones on my last trip. Was cool just seeing one again. Hope they can stage a comeback and spread to more areas.

I usually don't catch them till August/September ...but I know May/June are traditionally the time to target them here...always a treat when you realize what you have at the end of the line

I look for them down the cape each spring before I get going with bass fishing. I did get one on cape a few weeks ago, it was pretty small maybe 3-4 lb range but was still great to see. I think the last time I caught one was 3 or 4 years ago.

Back when they were plentiful in Narragansett Bay we were always able to increase our score by adding a strip of squid to our jig heads/soft plastics.

Use to be you caught most on bucktails w/a trailor or rubber. Last year far more were caught on SPs and Mag darters.

They are at the west haven ct beaches. I lived in west haven for my first 25 years and know the shore, pm me if you want to know where to go, productive tides, etc. the beaches in west haven are among the least nice in New England, and the fishing would rate as way below average, but they get a decent run of small schoolies and weaks at this time of year

The last 3 years I have caught weakfish in Ct in may, and I do not fish at the WH spot where everyone and their brother goes to fish for them...

Ive caught them at 3 separate spots, all are sandy beaches with a decent rip someplace, i usually find them during the top half of the incoming / slack high / first 2 hrs of the drop. spots as far south as southern fairfield CT / NY border up the ct coast to NH county...

this year they seem to be smaller then the past 2 years, or maybe its still just earlier due to the cold spring we are having for the tiderunners we got lucky with last year.

this year I've been trying my hardest to get one on the flyrod, so far no luck with the fairy wand!
