Cod reel

Time to buy a new cod/haddock reel. Fishing will be in the 150-300' range. I know this has been discussed before in various ways shapes and forms but here goes. Now that there are newer style reels out, I think it's time to replace the old Senator 113H. I also have a Penn 330GTI that will be switched off my jigging rod and put on the bait rod. I am undecided between 4 different reels and want your opinions on each. They are all star drags with more than enough capacity to put a 350yd spool of 65# PowerPro with a 15' 50# mono leader.
In No particular order
1) Shimano Torium 16
2) Daiwa Saltist 35H or 40H
3) Penn Fathom 25N
4) Fin-Nor OFC 16L

I was excited to try a reel with higher speed but after talking and reading some people are happier with the torque of the lower gear ratio. I would say right now I am leaning towards the Penn or the Fin-Nor...what are your suggestions?

Torium 20 is great with 85 lb test braid

If you are comfortable with the Penn 330GTI, they now make a LD version. I have 2 and use for codding.

what are you using for a rod. i'm a shimano guy. i've got a torium 20 and i'm very happy with it. wish it was a 16

I've used all but the penn and I will say I am happiest with the Fin Nor.
It is smoother than the others has great drag and holds a lot of braided line.
Model is the OFC16L. I just ordered the 20L for deep drop tilefishing.

Got to disagree.
Torium is a very nice reel but my opinion terrible for cod.
Your jiggin away, set a hook on a fish and Bam, the anti reverse pops and the handle spins back and smashes the top of your hand.
I prefer the Daiwa 40h

We used to use the electramate reels for yrs cod fishing and wire jigging bass. My buddy by mistake bought one of these kristal xl601 reels and now we all use them for wire line bass and deep water cod etc. Great for deep water applications or a commercial day on the water. They have like a 28 pound max drag and are true workhorses. Kristal XL-601 Electric Kite Reel

My shimano torium 20 is used for the rec days and also as a kite reel, they are great for the price and comparable in quality to Rons Daiwa 40 suggestion. We originally purchased the torium 20 for its drag power as we had a lot of trouble reeling in large bass at anchor over at gay head with the strong current and the huge ass bass that used to be there in season.

Torium 16 or 20
I'll take the blown out anti reverse gears and smashed hands for the lightweight and high speed.

never had that happen?? shawn fishes with me and another friend alot and we both have torium 30's. i luv it smooth and fast. i would not buy the 16...20 would do. i get 450yd of 65lb powerpro and 60' top shot of 60lb mono on mine. could easy get 300yds on a 20 the 16 would be tight.
you really appreciate the fast line retrival on those 300' drops, ask jared, he fished all last year with a old penn. we were up in 1/3 the time he was
my top choices would be the shimano, saltist or penn,no particular order. in star drags...

I've got the finnor off 16,20, and 30.

20 is my favorite for cod - no significant weight difference as compared to the 16. A bit more capacity, so you're not working off a short spool when jigging out in the deeper water.

Daiwa Saltist much better reel, just as light and come on high speed (5.5-1) and super high speed (6.4-1)

Google Shimano Torium anti reverse.
The guy on the truth thatskes the power handles also sells a tricked out improved anti revers that fixes the problems with them.

Thank you guys, keep the opinions and suggestions coming. Any one of them are an improvement on what I have now. It seems like it ends up being a ford/chevy thing lol.
