License to carry

I had a LTC years ago (over 10). Anyway i let it expire and i'm ni the process of getting it back. I have to start over from the beginning. I went to my police dept, and grabbed an application and on the cover sheet it states the you can no longer use "All Lawful Purposes" as your reason for applying for an LTC.
I'm going to put down for personal protection, protection of family and property, and hunting and target. Will that be good enough?

KB&J SIDEACTION 12-27-2011 04:01 PM

Carry permit

Thats alot more than I would tell them. Its your constitutional right unless you are a convicted fellen!

mikecc 12-27-2011 04:52 PM

What you want to put down is "All Lawful Purposes"

Raven 12-27-2011 05:10 PM

in my case i can no longer
perceive the way of nature and run away
to live to fight another day

i have no alternative but stand and fight
i'll never give up my 2nd amendment right

well said MIKE

"A Class A license authorizes carrying of handguns, including large capacity handguns, for all lawful purposes, subject to such restrictions relative to the possession, use or carrying of handguns as the licensing authority deems proper, and carrying of rifles and shotguns, including large capacity rifles and shotguns, for all lawful purposes, subject to restrictions imposed by the licensing authority."

the states words... I would ask WHY they don't allow the phrase, seeing as it is theirs, is it your town's cover sheet???.. looks like they are trying to make it an issue... Contact GOAL, if it becomes an issue... but Mike is correct, that is what you want to say, and all you want to say.

Slipknot 12-27-2011 05:22 PM

My LTC used to state right on it "all lawful purposes"

now since it has been renewed last year, it has a space for restrictions and after that it says None. so I read that as the same thing

maybe Karl is on to something there with the town thing

Notfishinenuf 12-27-2011 06:18 PM

Sounds about right to me:uhuh:

Spoke in length on the phone just now with MikeCC, he gave me some great info.
The reason i was told by the officer giving me the application was, they Expect you to carry it for all lawful purposes, they don't expect you to put down gonna rob a bank. It seemed silly at the time, but what do i know.
I had one years ago, from the same town, what a process. I was waiting on it forever, spoke to a friend about it, he knew the state rep, Michael Rodriques, Mike made a call to the station on my behalf, and i had the chief of police himself call to apologize and tell me my license was all set and ready to go that day..
New chief now and i know him personally. He's my age, i went to school with him, a really good guy, and i also know 5 officers personally, friends i grew up with, played hockey with, and went to school with. They say it shouldn't be an issue, the only hang up i have is the reason. I worry about everything, i'm sure the reason i end up going with (above) will be fine. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for all your help fellas.

The issue is the arbitrary way that the state allows each town to issue licenses. Unless something has changed in the last few months, "All Lawful Purposes" is an appropriate reason according to MA law. It's ridiculous how much power the state law gives to chiefs to create their own "rules".

I just got mine last year. Fortunately, Franklin is extremely fair in how the Deputy Chief issues licenses - if your background checks out, then you get "Restrictions: None".

Good luck on the application.

Night Shift 12-28-2011 06:09 PM

I had to re-apply in Haverhill Ma. last February, and when I read that line I wrote in "To comply with the law". No issue was made and my application was once again approved. Karl F is right, don't be specific.

Goal was doing something with the legislature to streamline the licenses, there were too many different wordings for restrictions. Everybody's license should have the same wording.

Thanks for the info. I just went through the "Legislation Chart" on the GOAL website and it looks like there are a couple proposals in committee that would create a more balanced application process. Also, found out about Representative David Paul Linsky and wish he was in my district so that I could vote against him.

saltfly 12-31-2011 08:02 PM

I got mine in April in the same town as Karl. The detective doing the interview wrote in for me.For All Lawfull Purposes. It took 6 weeks to get it in hand.

good2hook 04-20-2012 09:54 PM

I dropped my app off on Feb 27th, haven't heard a thing since. It's been 8 weeks. When i dropped it off, he said 4-5 weeks. I called this week and asked, they said "not sure who told you 4-5 weeks, it's at least 6-8", i said, "its' been 8"?:smash:

I believe in MA there are misdemeanors that disqualify you from a LTC as well. I wish MA was a shall issue state, the BS gun laws here are ridiculous, the most ridiculous is the need for an FID.

Boston has nothing to do with it. You apply to your town, the package is forwarded to the MSP. They do a state check, and forward your package to the FBI for the federal check. If that comes back clean, and the state check is clean then the MSP send the package back to your town's licensing person with a go. It is then up to the chief and the licensing person to decide what permit to issue you and with what if any restrictions.

It should take 6-8 weeks by the law, but sometimes it could take 10.

I would wait another week and call them the following week, it might be very busy at the state level.

This is correct.

I'm very happy with may issue. It keeps the s**tbirds and dirtbags that don't contribute to the community from having an LTC.

Here's the denial list: http://www.goal.org/masslawpages/masslawdenialinfo.html

keeperreaper 04-23-2012 02:01 PM

Got mine a few weeks ago and it took 8-9 weeks I believe. Class A restrictions :none.

Jenn 04-25-2012 05:30 PM

Putting in my pretty much useless 2 cents...

I just renewed and it took about 5 weeks for the renewal in the mail.

Redsoxticket 04-25-2012 09:38 PM

Why is it that people announce they have a LTC on forums that any search engine can find that can be used against you ? Pow your dead.

Silence is deadly if you got it keep it to yourself.

Piscator 04-25-2012 09:50 PM

Why should you be silent about your right?

Redsoxticket 04-25-2012 10:02 PM

Rights had nothing to do with what i stated.
If your packing don't need to tell anyone.

If your well trained in martial arts would you announce for everyone to hear your a black belt.

Absolutely, I'd be a total bad ass and everyone would know it. :rotf2:

My LTC is restricted to "hunting and target shooting," because I made the mistake of putting hunting on the application as to why I needed it. I won't make the same mistake when I renew.

For the same reason that the states where everyone walks around with a gun on their hip have lower crime rates than the ones that don't... the more legally armed citizens that exist, the higher the risk it is to the scumbags and a better chance that they think twice before breaking into someone's home or trying to rob a person.

Redsoxticket 04-26-2012 05:00 PM

Point well taken for those states that allows one to carry their weapon on the hip.
There are several LTC holders on this site whom I respect however I still believe a LTC holder should remain silent that they have a license.

Your right when it comes to "the chief has the power". there's a few towns on the cape who will denie everyone a lisc..they don't care who you are....they do this in hopes to force you to go direct to the state house and fight it...this gets the chiefs off the hook when it comes to passing out a lisc. and puts the burden on the state so if anything happens the town chief can say it wasn't me who gave him the lisc.

The interesting thing is in all of the cases where a licensed gun owner in this state has murdered someone with a gun, I have yet to hear of a police chief, or safety instructor being sued or brought up on charges.

They are just using it as an excuse.
