SO UM... JR Skip and others if you exposed your hard drive
to a very powerful magnet... that wouldn't remove this?

This is not new news, boot sectors, firmware and even bios tags have been around for a long time.

These types of attacks are very rarely used on the general population as therr is nothing to gain but way to much data and info to sort.

As the article mentioned the attacks would be again key and stratigic targets. Large banks, corp medical and government.

The magnet would only effect the platters, this virus would be in the rom of the drive the memory piece which to my knowledge would not be effected by a magnet.
