Newbie

I was thinking about giving this a try this winter. What would be a good basic set up for a rookie? Do I need a freshwater license? Any other helpful info would be great.

Ice fishing can be simple or complex...the longer your in the game the more gear you aquire. .spud ...slush scoop...sounders...and tip ups or jigging rod are minimal equipment ..creepers..Ice picks.. Are gold safty gear...a sled for carrying gear is nice...but 5 gallon bucket or pack basket can suffice...

Scan Craigslist, sometimes you can find some starter set ups for short money.

Let's see....

License
auger
traps & jigging stick (with bait for whichever you plan to use)
ice scoop
Ice picks (for safety)
Ice cleats (for walking on ice
something to sit on
something to haul your gear (a sled is most popular)
proper clothing WITH spares (just in case)
Hot food/drink (I'd save the booze for when you get home)
Itinerary (Let someone know where you will be going!)

And lastly...have fun!
