Conrad info
 

Well I guess i put this on the other site for some reason so it is a little easier to drag most of that stuff over here and I got a few minutes before the school bus comes so here goes. These are some lips I made a year or so ago when you couldn't buy them. You can now buy them from some of the sponsors. Pretty important part of the plug. Left blue plug is a Sr. and on right, white is a Jr.

Here is the lip info if you would rather try and make them instead of buying them for the stubborn people.:uhuh: Jr. info on left, Sr. on right

It is important to note that the lip slot is not on the centerline. If you put it there your wire slot will be too low and the plug won't dive as well.

There are also slope headed Conrads too like the yellow one in the Sr and Jr size. Not sure if there is such thing as a Peanut slopehead, yet. Also don't forget to put an eel skin ring on some of them too like in second pic. makes a great eelskin plug. That's all I got folks. Get to work.

Paul how much different is this lip than the old P-40 lip Bob used. I have a few of them thats why I'm asking. Ron

not real sure Ron I have none of those lips. I would imagine the face of the lip will not be long enough and then you have the line tie location.. The lips have a longer face than anything I have seen. If you have an old P-40 lip and got some dial calipers measure them up. I got the dim. above. There are some made by the sponsors now, of course after I made like a hundred of them. Have not used any of them but I would imagine they are pretty accurate. Definitely a nitch plug.

Great post! what did you make the lips out of? Aluminum? SS?
I make some of my own lips and blades from SS, how do you polish the edges after cutting to get them so perfect?

I use Stainless sheet but I do them on a Bridgeport so they come out smooth and then I tumble them after which eliminates all burrs. If I do them by hand grinding ,which I sometimes do, I use a deburring wheel to make the edges smooth and then tumble them. I like the dull tumbled look more than the shinny look for the lips but that is just me.

Paul, You got to pace yourself with these posts! Every time you put up a set of drawings, I've got to run out to the shop and make one:uhuh:!! Save some, It's gonna be a long winter.

LOL. You guys are the ones that need to pace yourself. I have already built them all at least once. I don't want to rush your guys. Take one at a time and enjoy the build. The info will be here when you want it. Don't miss the fun of building each of the plugs and swimming them. It is easy to get way ahead of yourself. I got a whole notebook full of them. Plenty for the whole winter and next winter too probably, if there is interest. Not saying I am an expert at using them all but I got the specs on plenty. I am lucky enough to know people that have incredible collections of plugs and I enjoy taking all the facts down, especially the old plugs that are not going to be made anymore. I need to write them down as I forget too fast.

To say just a simple thank you Paul for the above info seems to fall short. But thank you it is. Its great for all of us who cant get a hold of any of the original Conrad's.

I have gotten a hold of originals of most everything Pichney and Musso has made thanks to some incredible collections from this and the other site, although there are still a few I have not seen and may never. George has been very helpful too with his x rays thus saving a lot of guess work on weighting schemes too, a very important issue. VB has so much of other builders,a lifetimes worth, I have not yet even documented. If anyone wants info on some plug that they have not been able to find or handle I may be able to help and if I don't have it I can try and borrow it. I really enjoy doing this as the old plugs are well worth investigating and to let them fade away into oblivion while the modern builders take over just doesn't seem fair to me. I know I can probably never afford to buy any of them but if i can get my hands on one thru the generous guys that have been lucky enough to have them then I can at least make a copy of one and enjoy their design.

yes Frank but never seems to be a real problem. I think people sweat that a little too much. They are 2/0 on the white one but have not tried a 1/0 so that may fare better. I 'm going to do a few eelskin ones this winter.

I used 3/0 on a few pine jr conrads I made to slow the speed that the plug surfaced. They married so easily that they never did, and if they did they most likely unmarried on there own.

Might be worse if they can barely marry because then they surely wouldn't undue themselves.

Paul, you and George have been true treasures to casual plugbuilders such as myself. I can't express the gratitude I feel for you hard work and selfless generousity. The x-rays and schematics are the Rosetta Stones of our hobby. Thanks.

You know Fred it is just fun to have so many people interested in something that interest you. Misery loves company. My wife looks at me like I am demented being so interested in such a simple thing like a wooden plug and why in the world i am making more of them,and you got plenty already. I tell her everyone has to have a hobby and I am not alone nor am I the worst offender.

Quick question I noticed fouling with 2 belly hooks
Frank mentioned marry [same issue?]
I used just front and tail hook seemed to swim and catch well
Whats the concensus using less hooks ?
