Help setting the drag
 

I borrowed a spring scale and I figure I can use it to set up the drag on my reels. Here's my set-ups:
Lami SK 10 MS, Penn Pursuit, both with Penn 105CS reels, Big Game 30# mono, 60# flouro leaders.
I'd like to know a good starting point to set the drag at. I'm guessing at around 8#-10#s. I'm guessing there's no "correct" answer, and it's a matter of personal prefference, but any tips and suggestions are appreciated.

It all depends on where you are fishing, what structure you have, how deep etc.

when you set it with a scale be sure the rod is bent.

once you do that to where you need it, you'll get used to how much that is by a pull with your hand right off the reel. I always loosen the drag a little just before landing a large bass in the canal, so then before next cast I set it back again.

30 lb mono can handle 8 pounds of drag fine

Thanks Slipknot. I mostly fish rocky bottoms, and deep channels. I recently delved into the realm of plugs, I'm still trying to fine tune my equipment .

I have never done that though. Before I cast I grab the line and pull very firm. If it comes out too easy I tighten it and if it is hard to pull out out I just loosen a little. I have never had any problems with this method although it is not as fancy as your method.

Its one thing pre-setting drag with a scale for big BIG fish (tuna, billfish, shark etc.) on lever drags, but usually a rough guestimate is fine on bass/bluefish etc.
