Electric reel with kite rod yes or no
 

Have both,but seems to be a bit of a pain to use the electric reel vs a quick crank on the shimano torum. The electric reel is great for a quick reel in but the wires are all over the place in my small center console. Thoughts/ideas thanks.

Not necessary but makes things easier.
Switch electramate from push button switch to 3 position toggle and you can walk away doing something else.

Thanks Ron will give it one more shot with the electric. Always seem to be stepping on the wire and pulling it off the battery. As per usual went to turn the electra mate on and the wiring was correoded again :) Have a new Krystal reel as a back up striper wire reel,will try that this spring first.

Just replace the cord and put large alligator clips on the ends and either clip to boats batteries or carry a small battery jumper pack.
I have a nice small jumper pack with a big flashlight I keep on the boat..

Fined and old Shimano 80w triton beastmaster. That kite wont seem so bad anymore.

I have no issues with the electric reels just a pia with all the wires running around my boat. Always seem to step on the damn wires and pull the aligator clips when we hook up. Gona try both,just seems hard with the wires in the 23 foot boat. We tried a boat hook last year to get the kite up in the air worked great,again with the center console the enclosure/winshield block the wind and its sometimes tough getting the kite up the first 5-10 ft in the air. The boat hook worked great and was just sitting in my barn,gets the kite up 10 ft in the air. Yes Matt will be out for cod next week in my buddys 23t contender or Jeff Mottas red seacraft or my black one(decisions :) Got good intel so give me a call before you head out.

I use a 2 speed penn 10kg graphite reel on a short 30 class roller rod.
It can double as a cod jigging or shark rod also.

Ha ha ok Niko too funny. Freak still wondering why I bought a small kite rod,does the longer rod work better for you ?

Longer rod gets it higher to begin with. You can stretch your arm out high and the kite tail won't sit it the water.
We still struggle certain days running it up the outrigger or up to bow even up in the tower to get it to fly. My boat blocks all the wind it seems.

One boat I fish on has an old beat up Penn130 as a kite reel. Makes short work of the kite.

The guy across the dock from me (Ronnie knows him) bought one of those fancy electric kite reels. It's super slick.

Andrew we have 4 of the nice krystal electric reels we use for bass fishing as well,they are great for reeling in the kite,but the wire is always on the floor,connected to the battery etc. The simplicity of an old fashion powerful reel along without the wires and cumbersome electric reel just seem so much easier. Not sure which way to go,long rod short rod,electric or manual. Will try em all again I guess just like it simple. Lost one kite last yr due to very strong winds so we replaced all the kite line with 80 pound braid vs the 65 which seems to be holding up. Any winds heavier than the 80 pound braid figure we should not be out there anyway.

Mark, not to add more work for you but is there anywhere you could mount an outlet (would help keep the cord out of the way)

First day I ever tried a kite, wind was screaming. 30 knot NW sitting inside Wood End trying not to get killed, sitting on the anchor

Put the kite up, f'er takes off at about 50 mph. I start adding more drag to the kite reel, more drag, can't stop it, more drag. Finally lock up the drag, the braid held thank god. My kite was about 500 yards up.

Took me 1 hr to get the kite back. It was like fighting a tuna fish. Pull reel, pull reel. Tough first kite lesson.

Dennis we could add an outlet,but its still the same situation with the wire as the kite reel gets moved around the boat etc. Going to try it one more time with the electric and bring the torum as a backup. Just need a strong drag on the kite reel to yank it in,last year was able to send my sabiki rod for a swim when it caught the kite line too :)

Interesting aside, the guys who I regularly fish giants with, fish 2 small to medium size bluefish per Boston Big Game Kite and they fish 2 kites at a time.

So at any time, there can be two kites and 4 lines with bluefish in the water. If you're not 100% on your game it can quickly turn into a clusterflock. You literally have to do a dance with 130s. It helps to have 10 rod holders too and lots of longline clips. Lines going all over the place.

On my boat, I have trouble with 1 kite, 1 fish and two rods without kites.
