Kayak to refinish

My son wants to get back into kayaking...I told him he could have one of the two kayaks I built, that have been stored in the shop attic for ten years or so. The natural wood finish has faded and it has some wear and tear, so he has decided to refinish and paint this time. So far he has completely cleaned and sanded the hull. We will do a few minor repairs then primer. The shop is a mess and needs a good cleaning first.

Thanks.....Fishing from the kayak was the most fun I've ever had.
Have I ever mentioned the 50 lb'er I had in my hands that got away?
That was a long time ago but I remember the whole sorry event.
Took the kayaks out last week for a short paddle...my shoulder pain kept me awake most of the night.

Keel area at the stern was worn through from dragging the kayak up onto rocky beaches. Epoxied some 17 oz biaxial cloth over the spot.
Biaxial is great because the threads run at 45 degree angle to the joint making it stronger.
The weave will get filled and sanded smooth before primer goes on.

Two part primer from Interlux...great product... ive used it before ...but forgot how bad the fumes are.

Warm day last nov. .....rafting up with a couple of buddies on long pond.
My nickname is "lighthouse" given to me by a fellow SB'er..

Rmarsh 03-30-2021 05:34 AM

Three coats of two part primer sanded and ready for finish......coaming done with epoxy/graphite mix.

Rmarsh 05-05-2021 06:30 AM

Ready to hit the water...looks white but it's seattle grey by interlux.

It is unlikely that he will be fishing from it. I have tried and its not very forgiving in initial stability. This hull is built for speed and tracking ....only has a 23" beam @17' long.

My home made 15' has 28" beam and is so much more stable....very good for fishing......but hard at keeping up over longer distances.

It's a work of art. I'd hang it in my Livingroom.

got out yesterday with my son for a sunset paddle....

Beautiful stuff Bob,,, thanks

My son has been getting out in the refinished kayak
We have been wondering.....How durable is the one-part paint?
Too early to tell....but so far its fine.

Rmarsh 07-22-2021 05:48 AM

Second time out in ocean waves on Sunday....my son capsizes.....wet exits and comes up fine....cowboy hops onto the back of his kayak but capsizes again trying to get his legs back into the cockpit in the choppy water. Trys again and fails. So I paddle over and pontoon the two kayaks together to stabilize...he gets back in and is fine. He has learned......expensive sunglasses and new hat are gone....leash it or lose it.

Jeepers, hope you were close to shore nonetheless! Glad you are safe.

Rmarsh 07-28-2021 06:00 AM

Thanks.....been canoeing and kayaking with my son since he could walk.....
so capsizing is not new to him/us....he stayed calm as always....and I was never worried.

Yep... Is why I love my 20' fiberglass jetty.... My SOT lasted one season, mostly due to my struggles with loading and unloading... But capsizes were a close second.

There was a group of guys ...used to a do lot of whitewater paddling with them..... canoes and kayaks....
including three of my brothers that jokingly called themselves "brothers of the foam"
Initiation included purposely capsizing at the start of the trip.....to get that out of the way.
and practice self rescue and recovery.

Thanks Ray! Yeah its pretty heavy....performs great......trouble free after so many years of use....stays in the shop....the mobile base accesory is well worth it.
In the foreground of the first pic is a little tool that I wish I had picked up years ago. Its a FG cloth cutter....has a retractable disc blade...press down and cuts the stuff so neatly!
