We can't prevent him from coming to speak at the UN. I see the UN in the same light as I see ASMFC. A conglomerate which is impotent in it's ability to regulate.

crazy me for thinkning out of the box, but couldnt we have grabbed him and stuffed him in prison until they released the hikers? Who would complain if we did? If those were your kids, isnt that what you would want?

FishermanTim 09-24-2010 11:53 AM

If we, as a country, continue to NOT stand up for ourselves and our own self interest, we will end up falling to our knees to someone elses'.

Can we see just how far the prez and his flunkies will bend over to take whatever these "napoleans" of the world shove at them?

Fly Rod 09-24-2010 02:04 PM

Since they were activist aganist the American establishment maybe the U S was in no hurry to free them.

Hikers In Iran

I love it, these individuals show a complete lack of responsibility and RIJIMMY looks to the Government to come to their rescue.

I'd note the USA didn't pony the 1/2 M bail for the woman either.

Explain please.

You have three Americans in one of the hottest Taliban strongholds in Iraq, northern Iraq, they were never held prisoner nor executed which most Americans would be just being American.

Whose side were they on?

Innocent? They crossed the border illegally.

Apparrently Iran understands border control better than the US does.

I thought living in the strongest country in the world meant something, I guess Im wrong. I thought we protect our citizens no matter what country they're in?
SO we protect illegal aliens in our country, give terrorists civil rights but dont do everything in our power to free our own citizens when held captive by other nations?

striperman36 09-26-2010 05:58 PM

I think out of sight out of mind applies. How long was that guy incarcerated in China until Carter went? Obama's aunt it getting more attention, and money. As she says it is her right to get that

JohnnyD 09-26-2010 06:15 PM

You don't want millions spent locally to lazy idiots who don't have a job, but you want the government to spend millions to get some morons out of prison who knew exactly the chances they were taking?

"chances they were taking"
see, thats the funny part. We've come to accept that 2 bit nations can threaten US citizens. If you go into a rough part of town at 2 am and you have an M-60, you wouldnt say you were taking chances. Thats the "old" America. Now, were walking through a rough part of town with a pink sweater and a toy poodle. Thats the "new" America.
Just another example of "weak" america that will empower more terrorists than the invastion of Iraq ever will.

The Dad Fisherman 09-27-2010 08:42 AM

Did they cross the border illegally? If so they broke Iranian Laws and this is what they get.

We expect people to obey our laws when they come here.....why should we not expect Americans to obey the laws of other countries when they go abroad.

Just because they are American doesn't give them the liberty to do whatever they want and then expect my tax dollars to save them. If someone goes strolling into the Korean DMZ and get arrested or shot, it's their own fault for being a jackass. There shouldn't be any response or ramifications. Bad things are suppose to happen to people who make poor decisions - they are now feeling the ramifications of their poor choices.

From his interview with the Globe:
"You know that every country has very strict rules to control its borders. It applies to every country including the United States. If you enter across the border illegallly the rules are pretty strict.... These three individuals crossed our border. Regardless of what they had in mind. I'm not the judge here. Accordijng to our law, they violated it."

RIJIMMY 09-27-2010 01:03 PM

you left out this part -

You should know that there are seven Iranians who are in prison right now in the United States. They did not cross the US border illegally. They had visas from a third country and they were visiting a third country legally. They were intercepted by American officers in a third country, arrested and brought to American soil. Iranian people read about this and what do you think they think? If the judiciary releases these three Americans the Iranians are going to attack the judiciary building and bring it down to the ground floor. They will say, 'how come you did that when there are seven Iranians in prison illegally in the United States?

I think perhaps a good gesture would be to exchange, to swap these people. Let's have a formal judicial agreement so that . . .every party can be brought to justice before the courts of their own country when cases of this nature arise.

at least they fight for their people.......Americans will turn on Dancing with the Stars and suck down a few bags of Doritos.

RIJIMMY 09-27-2010 01:10 PM

basically, everything all of you posted is incorrect. They were not in a war zone.
Also, they are not being held for crossing the border. they are being held for ESPIONAGE! So, its not the responsibility of our country to get them out?

On July 31, 2009, three Americans, Sarah Shourd (31), Shane Bauer (27) and Joshua Fattal (27), were detained by Iranian border guards whilst hiking in Iraqi Kurdistan. Iran claims the three crossed into Iranian territory,[1] but the three Americans claim they were kidnapped from within Iraq.[2]

Sarah Shourd was released by Iran on September 14, 2010.[3]

In June 2010, an article in The Nation alleged that two villagers said the hikers were accosted by Iranian authorities while they were on the Iraqi side of the border.[2]

The three, anti-war, social justice and Palestinian solidarity activists,[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] had been living and active in the Middle East, and were on holiday in Iraqi Kurdistan, an autonomous region of Iraq free from the sectarian struggle that dominates much of Iraq[13][14][15]. They had been advised of the suitability of the region for a holiday by friends who had been there and through Internet research; and were recommended the Ahmed Awa waterfall, a popular Kurdish tourist destination, by a number of local people whilst they were in Sulaymaniyah.[15] After visiting the waterfall, they continued walking within what they believed to be Iraqi Kurdistan, up to and including the time they were detained by Iranian border guards.[16]

According to the BBC, they were not "publicly charged" with a crime by Iran;[17] but according to the New York Times, they have been held on espionage charges since their arrest.[18]

Their companion, Shon Meckfessel, was not detained, as he stayed behind at the Hotel Miwan in Sulaymaniyah because of a cold. He had intended to join them the following day.
