Saturdays 1-3" in the lakes region turned out to be a travel night mare but provided some fast white perch fishing once the front advanced...

I had set up my favorite lakes region lake shortly after sun rise, to be joined by The Dad fisherman and Rockport 24.... we set for rain bows ( that were a no show) and white perch...at noon the only cutomers were a few large pickerel.. as the snow picked up in intensity around 1PM the flags began to pop.. a combination of live smelt on tip ups and jigs tipped with dillies in 22-24' of water provided a combo limit of 13 white perch and 2 yellow perch... I'v got more pictures on my cell phone ( left at home today).. here's a few i got afterwards ( excet the pickerel) becasue my camera was in a back pack 100 yards away from the action.. once located.. chum in the form of cut smelt kept them in the area.. proven by an annalsis of the stomach content of one some of the whites...

Nice job. Are the live smelt purchased or caught for bait?

Nancy made a heaping platter of batter dipped corn meal fried perch with home made french fries , a spinach salad and grilled asparagas... I've got enough for one more meal out of that lot..I topped it off with a bottle of shipyard Monkey fish IPA... in the middle of january that's as good as it gets!

It was an absolute awesome time!! Thanks to Kevin and Joe for showing me the ice fishing ropes! Definitely is something I'll be doing more often :D

Towards the end of the day, Joe was absolutely hammering the perch, dancing between flags, it was like an ice fishing clinic. I ended up with a bunch of different fish and even got some to bring home as well - tasty critters!

thanks again guys..

My pleasure.. always a good time when you share a bounty with others..Just think if we left at noon we would have been all but fishless... like I said up there.. just have to wait for the turn of the tide ( or in this case passing of a front)we'll do it again before seasons end.. the fishin's just going to get better from now until ice out..

Hey I'm in! One thing is that it was a work out as well, running between flags and covering a lot of ice to find the fish ended up being a lot of work in the conditions we had, and here I thought ice fishing was all beers and lounging around!

That's what a lot of people think... hard core Ice fisherman work their baits just like open water... you saw I constantly move baits, adjust... change depths.. eventually it works in your favor.. like I told you on our walk off the ice.. i loose an average of 10lbs during the coarse of the ice fishing season...and it aint from sitting on my keister doing 16oz. curls...we do have those days but normally it is bright sunny days when nothing's moving.
