Wireless streaming for music

Curious if anyone has done the homework...

I'm putting together a new stereo and want to get all my CD's into storage. So if I rip them to my PC I believe I can stream them to my new receiver which will also be networked.

My goal would be to be sipping a beer on the deck (where I have speakers already in place) surfing the web on my iPad...then get an itch for some music and control everything remotely. It looks like the Apple AirPlay device might work but you're stuck using iTunes. Music would likely be on a Windows machine...

Thoughts?

i see no problem with that scenario

i haven't yet recovered from the halloween 2011 nightmare storm
that fried all my stereo components...

What about a wireless network hard drive connected to the both the wireless receiver and the ipod or smartphone. The pc will not always have to be turned on, only when ripping cds.
I have not done this, just saying.

We usually leave this PC on anyway as it's used daily and the printer is hooked up to it rather than networked directly. Also, I already have a drive I believe is plenty big to hold all the tunes...

Easy... Windows phone! Don't laugh, I absolutely love mine (1st Gen Samsung Focus)and can't wait until September so I can upgrade to another one. Your outdoor speakers will be hooked up to a networked receiver? You'd be all set, it would do everything you want..
Even if it was an extra phone with bare minimum service you might find it worth it... Not sure which carrier you have or how much that would cost...

Seems like this may be doable. With a network receiver and Apple AirPlay I can stream from an Apple device straight to the stereo which has it's own iPad remote interface. With Apple Home Networking I can access the iTunes library on my PC from anywhere on the network.

The only real question is how much will it cost to get my son to rip 300 CDs?

FYI Apple Home Networking is pretty cool. I don't think many people are even aware of it.
