Best Live Show You Ever Saw!

:eyes: I have seen alot of pretty great shows.....I enjoy watching anyone who can play a guitar so my focus has always been on the best pickers on the planet! (Or at least the ones I enjoyed the most) I have seen Clapton about 10 times, Robert Cray 6 times, BB King 5 times, Buddy Guy, Pink Floyd, Kenny Wayne Shepard, AC/DC 2 times, Van Halen, Fleetwood Mac (Lindsay B#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&gham gets an honorable mention), #^&#^&#^&#^&ey Betts, Jeff Beck, Mark Knopfler......crap I can't remember them all.......but the best show I have ever seen live......was Stevie Ray Vaughan any one of the 8 times I saw him live! The first time I ever saw him was at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium back about 1986-87?? I had 8th row floor seats! The bottom of my jaw had floor rash by the end of that show I was just so freakin' blown away buy the quality of his play and the incredible energy he exuded simply by playing his guitar....no jumping around or anything.....he just played like he was on an entirely different plane than anyone I have ever seen! Best of all was he sounded as good if not better live than on his albums! His one well played note was as good as anyone elses 1000 notes.......just awesome! Also of note was the last time I saw him play with Jeff Beck!!! Amazing show.....from both of them....but when they teamed up on "Going Down"......if you have never heard the recording of them doing this song treat yourself.....it was just mind blowing!! I still get chills down my spine when I hear this track!

My honorable mention is John Hiatt......one of the top shows I have ever seen......just a true showman, incredibly entertaining and had the crowd in the palm of his hand! One of the greatest songwriters ever and a very gifted guitar player!

metallica on the load tour. although i hated that album and anything beyond it, that tour was incredible. i saw them 4 times on that tour, twice at the fleet center(back to back nights), once in providence, and once in worcester.

I've been to an insane amount of shows in my time.

The very best was Iron Maiden's "Somewhere Back in Time" world tour show at GreatWoods on 20 June 08.Considering all the horrible things that had happened to my dad at the time this was a needed break for me.I hung with some of the greatest fans on the planet.

Jimi Hendrix,Johnny Winter,& The MC5 at the Boston Garden.WOW!!! the added attraction was the Devils Deciples and the Outlaws duking it out at the opposite end of the floor.Jonny Winter was playing and he didn't miss a beat.Janis Joplin at the Ridge Arena in Braintree.Cream, their 1st appearance in Boston at the Jazz Workshop on Boylston st accross from the PRU. we went to the 1st show and there weren't many patrons so when the second show was to go on the owner told ,all who were at the 1st show we could stay as a THANK YOU. J.Bruce,G.Baker,& E.Clapton came out and had a few drinks with us before the second show.COOL!

The Kinks - Boston Garden in 81....amazing energy at that show.

Honorable mention goes to David Bowie and The Tubes Oakland Colliseum in 83

You ain't lived til you've heard Mondo Bondage Live

Yes and Jethro Tull 1971 at the Hampton Beach Casino. It was the first concert for Yes in the US. The " Yes Album" was released shortly after this concert and "Aqualung" had been released before this show.

Due to the Casino being overrun by the crowds the State Police were called in( some were on horseback) for crowd control. I was one of the first people in before the masses crashed the doors.
It was the last concert they had there for many, many years.

Being an old fart I've seen them all..Dylans 1st elec. concert w/the Band at Symphony Hall, Beatles at Suffolk Downs , Hendrix at the Garden, Jeff Beck Band w/Rod Stewart on vocals & J.Tull as opening "unknown" band at Symp. Hall ...but I have to pick these 3 tied for best. 1st was the original FleetwoodMac w/Peter Green at the BostonTeaParty...PG;the most emotionally expressive player I've ever heard and a major influence in my playing career and hands down the best live band entertainers...ever; 2nd.. The Who at the Music Hall for their Who's Next Tour. The whole building was pitch dark while the synth intro to Won't Get Fooled Again (?)played. When Townsend hit that 1st thunderous chord and Daltry let out that primal scream "Yeeeeaaa" the stage lights went on and Daltry and Townsend were about 4 ft. in the air doing their trademark mic swing and windmill...freeking unbelievable...you could "feel" the sound..my ears have been ringing ever since. And last but not least BB King @ Northeastern Univ. in 69. Most of the crowd was from the Roxbury community and I was sitting with my buddy in the balcony.. 2 token white boys.. in the middle of about 50 very enthusiastic black ladies. These ladies were standing on their chairs dancin and screamin"Tell Your Tale BB" and we were caught up in the moment with them..it looked like the crowd in that Ralph Machio/Steve Vai "duel with the devil" in the Crossroads movie. BB did 4 encores..they wouldn't let him off the stage. He was throwing guitar picks, his tie..everything but Lucille..out into the crowd. When he came back on after the 3rd encore he said he didn't have a pick left and people started throwing em back at him. He picked one up off the stage and ripped into his final tune...40 years ago and I still remember it like it was yesterday.

Metallica with Godsmack at MSG. GA floor, even got to high five everyone except Kirk Hammett :hihi:.

Slipknot 12-02-2008 09:51 PM

John Lee Hooker 1985 at a place called Chooies in Tempe , AZ
he cam on after 10 and freikin rocked the house like nobodies business. The guy is a legend.

Had some memorable Dead shows too
Floyd and Geils were great too(I saw them at the paradise years ago also when they tried a comeback, it was good, not the same though)
but John Lee Hooker was just unreal that night in that little club

Raider Ronnie 12-02-2008 09:59 PM

1985 Philidelphia stadium
Live Aid , LOTS of different live acts that day

Nebe 12-02-2008 10:02 PM

sokinwet...:claps:

the best live concert for me was probably Phish/Santana at great woods in 91. Good times.. good times.

fishbones 12-02-2008 10:30 PM

The most memorable for me was Metallica at PPAC in 1988 for the Master of Puppets tour. It was one of the first shows after Cliff Burton died and they tore the place up. My ears rang for days after that.

The Dead and Dylan somewhere in upstate Vermont around 1994 or 1995 was pretty memorable, too. But that one was memorable for what I can't remember from that day.

tautog 12-03-2008 06:24 AM

To me the venue means a lot to a good show. I've seen countless arena and big crowd shows and while they are great the small venues are best.
Mountain w/Leslie West at the Blues Cafe in Newport
Little Feat/New Riders at the Music Inn(I think) in the Berkshires
Roger McGuinn at Salt in Newport
Plus all the regulars Dead,Allmans,Dylan,Tull,Jefferson Starship etc( plus the ones I forgot

That was a great show.
With Corky Lang too... I still have a drumstick from that show somewhere...

Saw Son Seals @ the call in Providence w/ Tautog01 when I was 18, first bar show. Back when Son Seals had two legs and before he got shot in the face (true blues..)

Really difficult to pick just one. Bob seegar and the silver bullet band, Eagles Hotel cali tour, Kiss with Queen as the opening act at prov civic center. Remember a Yes concert at the civic center where they actually took the whole civic center off the planet. billy joel, fleetwood mac. I went to a concert called summer jam that had Thin lizzie, Atlanta Rhythm Section, foghat and a couple of other bands. J giels band on new years eve in beantown. It was nice back then when the best seats were only $12-$15 and cheap seats were $7.
This past summer pojekt revolution, an all day/night concert with Linkin Park as the headliner. Wife and I went to the Melody tent this summer and saw Michael McDonald good time. they were all a great show. there were a bunch more.

ProfessorM 12-03-2008 12:45 PM

Can't pick one. I can't remember half of them for Pete's sake. I don't think I ever saw one show straight at least until I was 30 anyway and I don't regret it one bit. Here are 5 shows that stick in my mind:conf:
Any of the 4 times I saw Tull, always top notch
Dixie Dregs, front table at the Paradise, twice
Larry Carlton, front table at the Paradise
Atlanta Rhythm Section , Orpheum
Rush , Music Hall
way too many more I have left off. I can say I have pretty much never seen a bad concert, at least that I can remember.

I may not be as "seasoned" as some of you gents, but I have seen a ridicules amount of shows, to pick just one would be too hard...
Lots of things make a show great, the atmosphere, the crowd, the music all play a factor in a show for me.
Some of my best times were at The Dead :smokin:
Craziest crowd time, Gangster Bitch Barbie:rumble:
Best Acoustic show Dave Matthews w/ Tim Reynolds at Amherst
Even Motley Crew the Girls, Girls, Girls tour was fun too :heybaby:

fishbones 12-03-2008 09:47 PM

Another show I saw that was both memorable and fun was Yellowman at Grumpy's in Falmouth in the summer of 2000. There couldn't have been more than 100 or so people there. The best part of the night was that Charles Barkley played bass for the entire show.

Katie 12-03-2008 11:23 PM

I've only started my concert going journey. Last year I saw Three Days Graces and Breaking Benjamin and the civic center I must of talked about it for a year. Then projekt revolution this july, best part of the whole day was Chris Cornell and Linkin Park. I would loove to see all of them again. :D

I'm counting the days till the Nickelback tickets go on sale next week, steep as hell prices though.

Crafty Angler 12-04-2008 12:03 AM

Tough one to come up with a best - I guess I've got several in a tie for first.

In no particular order:

Cream at the old RI Auditorium

Hendrix, same venue

Led Zeppelin at the Newport Festival

Sly and the Family Stone at Newport

Van Morrison, Fillmore East, and

Santana at Woodstock. Yeah, I was there but slept thru Hendrix...:sleeps::sleeps::sleeps:

Oh..from this century, Alison Krauss and Union Station at URI :hihi:

stcroixman 12-04-2008 07:22 AM

simon & garfunkel - 1982 Foxboro stadium
dylan and Tom Petty - 1986 Great woods
Neil Young - 1987 - Great woods

WHOA - those sound awesome

PaulS 12-04-2008 08:02 AM

I've seen a decent amount of shows but the most fun in terms of participation was the Modern English early this summer in a 200 seat hall. By the end of the 2nd show everyone was up dancing and including on stage. The same org. is having them come back this new year's eve but in a venue about 2,000 seats so I'm not going as it won't be nearly as much fun.

JohnR 12-04-2008 08:06 AM

Floyd - Pulse & DST (never got to see them before the split so the rest of ya lucky ones shaaddduppp)

Peter Gabriel, 93 or so, Woosta

Boston, 95 (or so?), Woosta, saw 4 nights

The Dad Fisherman 12-04-2008 08:09 AM

Saw The Ramones at the Metro on Landsdown st in 81-82? awesome show....another show that was just raw energy.

Ozzy Osbourne w/ Randy Rhodes on guitar at the Orpheum in '80 was another great show.

must have been good. Anything there is good.
Saw Charlie Daniels there, before Devil went down to Georgia fame. A way overplayed tune IMO and not even close to his best talent. They were fantastic.
