A little respect for bass players

A huge part of all bands and don't get the recognition they sometimes deserve. Here are a couple of different styles John Entwistle/rock----John "Jaco" Pastorius/jazz/fusion. Unfortunately they are with us no longer.

you want to hear great bass please check out Jaco Pastorius Big Band . All music written by Jaco and preformed by a fantastic band with all the great bass players of today. He would be proud of both of the albums. Word of Mouth revisited and The Word is Out

Last one although I can name 10 more great ones that deserve mention. as you can tell I am biased toward the fusion side. Wooten is fantastic, esp. live. I'll let some others play

Jimmy Haslip.

Jack Bruce was always a favorite, classically trained with a jazz background - a good Letterman clip of Jack with some tasty bass riffs with Ginger Baker on drums:

A younger Jack Bruce and Clapton - Cream in their prime, '68 - dude, that was 40 years ago....

And an interesting comparison during the Cream reunion:

This type of music may not be many peoples' cup of tea, but this guy is very talented and virtually unknown as a bass player. They put on a great live show.

Mr 5 string bass you need to get these 2 albums. You will like them.:hihi: If you don't want to buy them send me a pm and I will burn them for you. Both albums are a who's who of muscians playing music Jaco wrote throughout his career and arranged for a large band. Fantastic albums. Both a must have.

Thanks for the links. I haven't yet heard those cds yet, but I wil look for them. I just have some of the older stuff: jaco's solo cds, some weather report stuff, a metheny cd, and Joni Mitchells herjeira too. The guy could really write well, his soloing is fantastic, but damn the guy could really pen a song. I also liked the marcus article, thanks for that. That guy is also monster on bass. I'm pretty sure I have a recording of his with him doing teen town and it was sick. I think I have it on cassette though :hee:, I really should pay a visit to FYE...

That was really good. Who is that playing with Jeff?

sokinwet 01-06-2009 07:24 AM

That's Tal Wilkenfeld on bass. She's played with a bunch of big names including Jeff Beck and Chick Corea. Quite a.........player! :-)
