I love it when my CC calls and asked if I made a charge :)

I prefer the calls also and also have set up immediate text/emails to come to me of suspicious charges, especially all at gas stations. Set a minimum charge $$ amount to also get notifications.

If you're making a credit card purchase online, see if you can generate a shop safe card number and expiration Shop safe lets you take control so your actual information is never out in the open. Just call your card provider and ask if they have a shop safe service. My card company allows me to logon, pick a specific $ amount as a max, and it generates a number and exp. date that I can shop online with. That is tied to the actual physical card. The acutual # is never transmitted over the wire or exposed.

Encryption alone is not enough of a safety measure.

Never transmit the actual number over the wire
Dont call to activate it
Activate in branch or at an Automatic teller (assuming the have'nt been breached)

Online theft is a majority of the theft. Use a bank the uses a temp # for a transaction
