President Reagans Greatest Quotes.

I voted for Reagan and was a big fan. He was anti-tax, anti-union, anti-welfare, anti-big government and anti-commie. He worked well with a Democratic House Speaker our own (Tip O'Neil). To parapharase Archie Bunker.. "Boy we could use a man like Ronald Reagan again."

One of my favorite Reaganisms

'Government is like a baby:
An alimentary canal with a
big appetite at one end and
no sense of responsibility
at the other'
- Ronald Reagan

Really? This sounds awful familiar, except this time around, this style plan to the right is about as palatable as eating sewage.... During the debate at the regan library it was said repeatedly; Regan would not get elected in the current politcal climate...

Taxes: What people forget about Reagan - Sep. 8, 2010

p.s. not the reduction in the top tax rate FROM 70%....

You're missing the point.

Reagan cut taxes too much, so after the 1981 restructuring he raised them 11 times (16 by some measures) to offset government spending and save SS.

For someone who was "anti-big government" he turned us into a debtor nation with reckless deficit spending.

For someone who was "anti-commie" he made massive concessions to the Soviets to garner peace deals and reduce nuclear stockpiles.

Reagan was good with the rhetoric for the Republican base, but a lot of his legacy WTR defining issues is actually that of a pragmatist.

Hell, even his own VP ran against his economics.

Reagan was a good president and led the nation through some difficult times, but people should remember him for what he really was and not was he wasn't.

No.
But the perspective needs to be gained that all the grumbling about the bush tax (breaks) cuts is a far cry from less than 30 years ago.....

I agree. And with a trillion dollars in give away programs maybe with a little thinking we can lower taxes more.

Question for Spence...When will you see Obama for what he is??

How much of your trillion dollars was actually in tax breaks?

I've got a good grasp for what he is, I also think I understand what he isn't.

When you say "tax breaks" do you mean, refunds to people that never put a dime in?

I'll bite...what isn't he?

There was certainly lower income assistance but still 22% of the entire package was tax cuts for Federal taxpayers.

Also, lower wage earners do pay payroll taxes which Obama has made cuts to, and asked for these to be extended.

Pass the Jobs bill and Obama could be one of the biggest tax cutting Presidents we've ever seen.

Spence is right.
It needs to lead to jobs though.

Agree on both points.

I think the Obama proposal will help but it's not going to fix the problem. We seem to be at or around the bottom of a big cycle that's going to have to work itself out.

I thought the jobs bill includes tax increases starting after 2013? Isn't tha how it's paid for??

Chesapeake Bill 09-17-2011 06:27 PM

The guy who helped Reagan think up most of those quotes (his press seretary, Mariln Fitzwater) lives just down the road from me. Heck of a nice guy. Wish I could say the same for Ronnie...although he was smart enough to put some really good people in places of power. Those folks made him look good.

The part of being a leader find the right people and put them in a position to make a difference.

Yes, by placing limits on itemized deductions for higher wage earners.

Probably a moot issue anyway.

Jackbass 09-18-2011 09:58 AM

It is a moot point because the legislation will never pass and it will provide Obama with another excuse for the campaign. "I tried to create jobs, they wouldn't let me" etc.

Eliminating the charitable contribution deduction is beyond stupid. What, stimulas is a better use of the money??
Glad we held our breath while the king and queen were on vacation so we could hear his "Plan"
He is what he is though.
