sharkin
well after friday of sitting on anchor tuna wishin from 5am to 330pm with nothing to show for it myself and a buddy decided to go play with some sharks saturday. Just blue sharks but they were hungry and fight unbeliveable on standup 50w's....a few pics and vids
we got out on to jefferies ledge and i got away from all the tuna guys( didnt want to chum up sharks next to them..) and spotted a dragger that was hauling in, so i figured they had all ready been chuming the water for us we started there( about middle ledge just before the curl) got 3 lines out with a slab of cusk on each one(finally a good use for those rubber skinned cusk, lol) well it took all of 5 min and drag started to sign and a balloon was swiming away and we were on .my buddy fought the 1st one. After a 45 min fight we had him boat side and released. Then after a long drift and 2 hrs later another came swiming around the boat, this one taste tested all the baits toys with us before finally wolfing down one right on the surface with us watching, this time i was up. 1st fish proved to be the easiest this one lasted close to a hr. before finally coming boat side and a release. then as i was sitting there sweating bullets and panting i saw another rod fold and drag was screamin and we were on again for anothe 1 hr fight. all the fish were in the 10' range as they were 1/2 length of my 21 walkaround. lol. now if we could just turn those into makos....lol http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j8...-19-44_562.jpg http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j8...-19-49_139.jpg vids 2012-08-25_12-54-45_766.mp4 video by deerslyr1 - Photobucket 2012-08-25_15-15-29_620.mp4 video by deerslyr1 - Photobucket |

like i said they sure are fun/ and willing to bite. i'm going again this weekend....and thats it pulling the boat for the year she's all done till april. kinda sad but, deer season is upon us :) |
Nice. I love shark fishing. You want a mako keep this in mind. Blues are trans-oceanic scavengers, makos Are predators and hunters who eat tuna!
Don't worry about sharking in the tuna fleet you'll be doing most of them a favor. that's also where the makos are! Don't try to drift thru the fleet, pick a spot and anchor with them and chum away. The tide is strong enough around here to carry a slick for miles. Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |

We got a little mako this weekend maybe 4-5 footer. Hit a chunk, on a piece of toilet chain hanging under the boat meant for bluefish.

Mike - your mako -in shore or off shore?
|
Had a nice 8 ft. Mako to the boat last weekend; thought it was a blue at first...thought it was a Mako when it did a "swim by" the boat & knew it was a Mako when it came 10 ft. out of the water 50 ft. from the boat. A bit of a snafu before we cleared all lines & it ran under the boat and broke me off. ;-(
