Nineteen oil tankers carrying fuel for U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan were set on fire by suspected Islamist militants in south-western Pakistan on Monday, reports quoting police said.
A convoy of 26 NATO oil tankers proceeding to Quetta, capital of Baluchistan province, was attacked by unidentified gunmen in the Dasht area of Mastung district.
Nineteen trucks were charred while firefighters saved the remaining seven. The gunmen fled the scene immediately after the attack.
No one took responsibility for the attack, but Taliban militants, who have repeatedly attacked NATO supply convoys across the country, are suspected.
The incident comes a week after six Afghanistan-bound NATO oil tankers were torched in Muzaffargarh, central Pakistan.
Militants frequently launch raids on vehicles passing through Peshawar and the adjoining Khyber Pass, a key fuel and military supply route for Western forces battling the Taliban in landlocked Afghanistan.
Hundreds of trucks and containers have been torched or plundered in recent years in the volatile tribal districts along the Afghan border, forcing the U.S. and its NATO allies to look for alternative supply routes through the Central Asian States.
More than 80 per cent of NATO supplies to Afghanistan are transited through Pakistan. |
