Mass Save energy audit

Had one done on the house this morning. It's free....and the rebates on having stuff needed done is nothing short of fantastic.

They're going to add 6" of insulation to the attic, airseal the sills, install proppa vents to keep the insulation out of the eaves, new thermadome on the attic stairs...$312 cost to me.

I got all new cfl bulbs for every fixture in the house. Oil burner efficiency test for independent consumption comparison....Free.

No brainer. Highly recommend it. You can sign up on the website free. Takes about 3 hours total.

Grapenuts 09-16-2011 11:13 AM

May as well have it done...can be a good thing when everyone is paying for it...all those little 7 cent-10 cent charges you get on your elect. bill an you say wth is this charge for...now you know...a friend of ours is one who comes to look at homes to see what is needed....good deal if your getting something done...bad if your helping to pay for something you don't need if your home is up to snuff..

UserRemoved1 09-16-2011 11:23 AM

Well pay your electric bill so I can get more done :D

 Hi Steve

They will GIVE you a 0 percent interest loan on a new oil burner. Nat Grid pays the interest.

Guy said I have 71% efficiency in mine, said that if I bumped it to a 96% model that I would save 1/4 of my oil consumption per year.

That's $500 a year savings...I got a 24 year old steel boiler. Waiting for it to die now is a waste of time. I'm going to have them replace it and put a hot water pony tank on it.. Serious no brainer.

Grapenuts 09-16-2011 04:03 PM

a friend had his attic done an pipes wrapped...and they even moved some basebrd. heating pipes that were in the eve's so they'd stop freezing up on him....only cost him 200.00 for all the work done.

How long were you on the list? I have been thinking about it for a while. In general we have switched to the new bulbs except areas you need bright light right away, like basement stairs where old school instant light at full force makes a difference.

UserRemoved1 09-17-2011 04:02 AM

I sent in the thing off their website and they called me in 24 hours to go over how it worked then made an appt and came 2 weeks later. Guy that does this area said I was the only one for the day but that they were pretty busy overall. It's not just changing bulbs James it's insulation and air sealing also. They'll look at your walls for insulation, discuss any problem areas in the house that are cold or hot, check your attic (I got alot of blown in fiberglass insulation but he said my batts had compressed due to the weight of the blown in stuff on top so it wasn't as effective anymore....hence 6" new insulation.) The insulation alone got to cost $300 this is a 24x36 colonial with an addition. The air sealing of the top wall parts in the attic he says will save quite a bit by itself.

Since this is a no brainer I called early December to set an appointment. If you use NE gas you may want to call sooner than later. The earliest appointment they had which Iset up was for late March. BTW thanks for posting this.

You never know maybe someone will send me a steak dinner gift certificate :hee:

I have heard about this...Is it throughg National Grid or my Gas company? Got a link to the actual sign-up page?

UserRemoved1 01-05-2012 11:31 AM

BTW We've seen a HUGE difference in the ability to heat the house. Pellet stove is turned down alot more than in past. I held the house at a very comfortable 67 overnight in the last few days.

Was up in the attic this morning for the first time. Still seeing glops of hoar frost on the inside of the nails. None on the roof sheathing itself just the part of the nail that pokes into the attic.

This bothers me cuz it says there's still warm or moist air getting into the attic. I've done reading on the web and this is a very common problem, one which many says ventilation is key but there's still something else going on here.

How to fix.... :smash:

Next Step Living is the people we used and they've been fantastic to deal with.

Took me 8 minutes to schedule an appt. for Jan. 16th.

UserRemoved1 01-05-2012 07:34 PM

Do you have NE gas? I was pissed that I had to wait 4 months. But she said it had to do with who your servicer is and your location. Reply back on this thread and let us know how you do.

If they hook me up I'll send you for a steak. Send me a reminder like they did. I received a post card 1st week of December for my appointment in late March so I wouldn't forget:rotf2: It's on my fridge and I laugh every time I see it. I can't wait but I can already see getting ready for it and them calling to re schedule for Monday the 15th of June 2018 between 8 am and 9pm.:rotf2:

UserRemoved1 01-05-2012 09:04 PM

The CT group came to my house today. "They refused to seal the house as the furnace was not drawing at all and it would have killed everyone" (according to the woman of the house ) So, now we wait for the oil company to check the furnace...

Just grabbed it to be sure. Now I remember I called in November to set this up. And I can't figure out how to rotate the cell phone pic's. But it's Mass save and NE Gas

WESTPORTMAFIA 01-05-2012 10:15 PM
