...or Drift anchor....Anyone use one? Often or just ocasionaly? How effective are they? Pros and cons ? Thinking about getting one for next season. What size for an 18' cc.

They are very effective for what they do......

But what are you trying to do with it? For fishing purposes?

I actually use a 30" one while trolling tubes or live bait. It gets me from about 2.8 to 1.9 kts. I troll it from the bow and it comes back to just forward of midships so if forgotten doesn't end up in the wheel. With that think opens up you feel the boat jerk.

One note......you really need to use to trip line on the back end for recovery.....otherwise a real pita.....

They work great at what they're supposed to do, but they are a PITA to deploy and recover.

for your size boat u can prob just use a 5g bucket with some 1.5" holes drilled In it. easier to deploy and recover and cheaper. I use it for my 23'

Thanks for the replies.... i want to try using one as opposed to anchoring on the bottom...only to have to pull up to move again....or being blown off a spot too fast. Could try the five gallon bucket.. and with the holes it could double as a chum bucket too...?

I'll use one while live lining sometimes but mostly for slowing the drift down fluke fishing ...
It's a bass pro I got used, has a retrieve line that makes for a easy get back..
Folds up pretty good also.....

I loved mine. Great way to slow drift and keep the bow into the wind. I think mine was bigger than 30". Used it on a 22' WA. MM and Beamie are right. Must retrieve using the strap on the nose. Never tried a 5 gal bucket.

Bucket works but sock is better. Had used bucket in past but got a drift sock this year I have 17 ft Carolina and usually only deploy in 10mph or higher winds for fluking and sea bass. I don't think it is that much of a pain.Makes all the difference in staying vertical while jigging. I got the next size up recomemended for the size boat i have which is what i heard was best thing to do from others. I I believe 36". Best 50 bucks I've spent on fishing gear in awhile.

the bass pro one is the best.

For slowing down the drift they are awesome. Get the biggest one you can. I often use it as we ALWAYS have a strong SW blow after 11 AM, and I can drift against the wind fluking. Without it, my fluking days would be very limited.
