Winter Brews

What's everyone drinking?

I have some Sam Winter in the basement fridge, which I always enjoy. I also picked up some Magic Hat Winter brew (Howl) on the advice of the guy at my package store. Had some yesterday and thought it was good.

BigBo 12-26-2010 09:21 AM

The Harpoon Winter Warmer's are very tasty.

JohnnySaxatilis 12-26-2010 02:15 PM

my winter choice is Long Trail Hibernator. strongggg.

O I tried a Dogfishhead Squall IPA this week as well. In a wine type bottle. Pretty good, but i was like hammered when we broke it open. sipping meal type beer, high alc. content and it aint cheap.

I like the Sam Winter Lager myself. I am usually a bud man, and rarely venture. I like their Octoberfest too.

BigBo 12-27-2010 07:57 PM

Bill, next fall, try the Harpoon October Fest. Even better than Sam.

Ok I will look for it.

I'm alternating between Harpoon Winter Warmer (old time favorite before Winter Brews got trendy) and Sam Winter.

Brooklyn makes a good Octoberfest. Saranac comes in second for me.

Wow BigBo,
I love Sam Adams October fest! Gonna have to do a taste test next year with Wachusett, Blue Hills, Sam's and Harpoon!

For me, the Winter Warmer is Christmas in a bottle. I'm digging the Harpoon Chocolate Stout lately. Great dessert beer.

Great Lakes Brewery has a very good "Christmas Ale"

Saltheart 12-28-2010 12:55 PM

I like Sams Winter Ale.

I never had any but Long Trail Hibernator is a Double Bock (Dopplebock). Tell me how I know?? Usually 7 Percent but can be even 13 percent.

If you want to make a good Winter ale , try a Ginger beer with a little clove and nutmeg. Should be a lot of ginger used. Ginger in large doses has a distinctive medicinal effect. Drink just one bottle of a high Alch , strongly ginger spiced beer and you will feel the effect of the ginger before the alch really hits you. Its an amazing feeling as that dose of ginger sweeps through your body.

So where do you find this High alcohol ginger spice beer?

You make it! :)

Try the Sam winter Variety pack. Get a good tastes for 6 different flavors.

Right now I'm into trying different craft Imperial Stouts. Smuttynose is very good.

The dogfishhead IPA's are excellent but real expensive. If you don't like a high alcohol content beer, it's probably not for you.

mmmm. Ditto. Just finished my second Harpoon WW of the night and going for #3. It's my favorite. I also like the Sierra Nevada celebration ale quite a bit.

Long Trail Double Bag. Strong and delicious.

You guys have to try Olde Burnside "Father Christmas Highland Ale", Its really good and it's 9.2% alchol. You can find it almost everywhere in ct package stores,I've seen it at some in ri dunno if they have it in mass yet? Brewed right down the street from me. Also comes in a cool looking blue bottle:buds:

At this moment, I have a Sam Adams Holiday Porter in my hand. I have to say that this is one tasty brew.

JohnnyD 01-02-2011 06:58 PM

Been drinking the Sam Winter. This year's Winter Lager is much better than lasts, in my opinion.

When I feel like treating myself, I've bought a couple bottles of Anderson Valley's Winter Solstice. Has an incredible and unexpected creamy finish to it.

Yes...and loved it! I have not had a beer from them I didnt love actually. And it is in W.Mass at least (or was anyway). Their brews are top not and I am super surprised they are not more popular/well known.

Try Delerium Noel, 9 percent alcohol. It's on tap where I work. It's excellent.

Besides that dogfish chicory stout is a great winter beer.

Long trail hibernator is my stand by, only comes around in winter.

I just had some Magic Hat Feast of Fools this past X-Mas.....Raspberry Stout.

I enjoyed it....the Wife....not so much

spence 01-06-2011 08:13 AM

Great Divide Hibernation Ale is quite excellent. Very well balanced for a 8.7% beer...

While I was reaching for a 12 pack of Sam's I noticed that the Noble Pils is out already - winter may be soon be over!.
Anyway, two years ago Sam Adams put out a white ale in the spring which was really tasty, but they replaced it last year with the Noble Pils, which I think is ok, but I'll stick with the Boston Lager.

The Dad Fisherman 01-26-2011 10:24 AM

I haven't been much in the mood for winter beers this year....actually been on a Wheat Beer kick lately.

Been drinking Shock Top Belgian White lately.....pretty tasty for an AB product.

also been enjoying the Haverhill Brewery Whittier White also...
