Inhereted Revolver

My father in law passed away recently. My wife went to grab some valuables as his house was going to be inhabited by caregivers for her mother who has Alzheimers. So she finds an older .32 revolver in his sock drawer, brings it home in a shopping bag and tells me to do something with it. It's pretty cool looking, actually, but the ammo that came with it is all corroded. It's empty and in my strong box.
But here's the question, I don't have a pistol permit and I haven't checked in NJ if you need to register a handgun, too. Could I take it some place and have it rendered unshootable and keep it without a permit? Right now I'm hesitent even to take it someplace just to see what it's worth.

Call a local gun shop, just don't tell them who you are, and ask them the questions.

similar thing happened to me from my god mother when i was a 10yr old. Old (pre serial number days) ..32 revolver. My old man filled the barrel and cylinder with lead and mounted it for me.......probably worth a fortune now as it is an old gun......
make anonymous call to local gun shop. was it ever used in a crime??????? may be worth a lot of dough.........

Thanks for the advice. I doubt it was ever used in a crime, he was from Pennsylvania Dutch stock. It was likely acquired in his youth or maybe when he was in the Army, probably purchased for sport more than anything else.

by the way, if it is old, the ammo, and especially the box if you have it may be worth more than the gun. Guys at gun shows lately have been goin gaga over old ammo boxes for some reason.........
