Any of you builders make your wrappers?

After my first rod I decided to buy some wood and put one together...But Im going off what I've seen on the internet....So maybe Im missing something clever or important in my design.

Just a thought.

The hole that the bolt goes thru needs to be snug so that it won't wobble, yet at the same time loose enough to spin freely. I think that a spacer cut to length and inserted is the thing to do. I'm getting one today from autozone. It'll be from a set of sway bar endlinks.?.

your right... what creates the wobble is the drive belt pulling down which is just enough for a snug wood hole to create a crappy wobble.

I've had a little luck with, in a matter of speaking, doing what you suggest by buidling up the sleeve of the chuck shaft.... this is with wood though... so, though it helps the wobble...it is still there.

I have seen some effective set ups that where brain stormed.
If you study how good roller setup is put together you'll notice that wing nutts allows to control tension, very important. The make-shifts I've seen where made from in-line roller skate wheels. Two wheels evenly spaced is where the blank sits and a separate top movable piece having one wheel sits on top of the blank, this piece has a groove and wing nutts so that its adjustable.
Mikecc gave me a similar set used for drying purpose but with a little ingenuity you can wrap rods with it too.

ive seen exactly what your talking about. I just need to figure out how to make the groove without the proper tools. :wid:

Right now I have 2 - 1x3x4's spaced just slightly apart and up on feet.

the rod supports slide along the groove with wingnut and lockwasher amd bolt through the support and groove it to secure it when its in the right place. This definetly helps keep it straight when its in the chuck...

this is the Lathe I made. Sewing machine motor to Stren Spool with Belt the silver piece is the Meat Grinder Attachment from a Old Sunbean stand Mixer. Chuck is Pac-Bay. PVC works also. Roller stands are just all thread with Alum Angle

the Wood bed was taken from elsewhere The Desk front rollers are what I use now
You can also buy T-Trak from Rockler supply also t -bolts and Knobs

this is another hand unit I use for longer rods 2 -3/4"X2" X6ft with a Alum track from a Bi-fold door set And a Home made thread Carrage using a Neptune thread tension devise. Small thread block is in a Dove tail slot with a Single foot guide glued in

just a shot of the Trak, These are the bolts on left is a slider I made,just alum block cut to fit with a 1/4"drilled and Tapped bolt thru.
bolt on right is just a Toilet bolt which works well with a Tee-Slot.

While driving around keep your Eyes open for Exersize Equipt out for Trash, Thats where I get the Plastic Threaded Knobs I use

I really do not take many photos of my rods.I usually do not build Fancy rods,just basic working rods. here are two I have

Be very care full using Roller blade wheels,if they are not NEW, they get grit,dirt and glass inbeded in them,and always use masking tape on the blank where the wheels will ride. they are made hard to support weight and will scrape the blank. You can get small bearing mounted idler pullys that will hold a rubber O-ring. google Idler pullys or Smallparts .com

Here is my self built wrapper. I am in the process of converting it to a power wrapper but have wrapped about 20 rods by hand. If you only do one every so often it is almost as easy to turn them by hand I think others may not.

Looks Good! I only do 3-4 a year, using the Desk Rollers. The power wrapper is only used for long underwraps (butt)

Jman I like those wraps.

The X flock is on a Lami 11 Footer,I added almost a foot to make comfortable for me to cast. When it was Given to me the butt was too Short. (20 inches)inner sleeved it re-enforced it with Thread wraps, re-wrapped it with cork Tape and then X-Flocked it. Casts like a Dream now! Its a Lami Glass Blank.

havent put the motor back on... BUT for the shaft hole through the wood, I cut down a bic pen and it really helps the wobble:lurk:

This is what I use for my drying. It is a old rotisairy motor from my grill. I also only make 5 or 6 rods per year and hand wrap them. After seeing some of these pictures I may mess around making a lathe for wraping.

taJon on your wrapper did you use a bearing or just a hole drilled in the wood on the motor side of the chuck? I am starting to assemble some of my junk to make one.

Here are a couple of othere pictures of the wrap. I realy dont know a Cheveron from a Chevy but maybe these will give you a better look. Regardless the rod itself still s#^&*.
