Derby talk 2017

Opens at 12:01 tonight.
Who will be the first S-B member on the board??????

CTSurfrat 09-09-2017 06:56 PM

I'm heading over on 9/21. Can't wait to get there. It's earlier than I usually go, hopefully it will improve my luck from the last few years.

Stripermaineac Ron on the Bass board....

CTSurfrat 09-10-2017 08:27 AM

That didn't take long!

Fish On 09-11-2017 11:37 PM

Some big gators weighed in on day 1. Looks like David K. and his boys have found them early. Will this be the year that the 45 year old bluefish record falls?

Good luck to everyone that makes it over!

rphud 09-12-2017 03:31 PM

I think Ron has 3 of the 4 already.

Swimmer 09-12-2017 03:50 PM

Derby

My money is on some of the guys who placed last year to continue in that same tradition.

Took me awhile to find where you saw that..... Team results. Makes sense.... he could be a team all by himself!

Always the toughest fish for the grand slam, no shortage in shore bones this year it appears. Hopefully he gets one soon. Looks like good fishing all around except the bass seem a bit small so far.

CTSurfrat 09-13-2017 07:56 PM

I hope Jose doesn't screw up the fishing next weekend. Fishing seems to be off to a good start this year - especially the Albies.

rphud 09-14-2017 08:05 AM

Ya know, I was going to ask him about that.

Sounds like the Albies chased the Bones off the bait around the island and over to the Cape. Nuts galore it appears.

Gotta love the Gazette! Covers the derby like the NY Times! Great story.

T's and P's to all those affected by the hurricanes.

Awesome job gentlemen. I'm hoping the fishing continues to be solid next weekend.

Frustrating. Why don't Fish and Wildlife just require a 2 hour training session for how to recognize and avoid plovers for each permit. Escorts for driving? WTF! You need escorts/monitors for the skunks and gulls.

nightfighter 09-24-2017 06:53 AM

Fishing appears to be improving after Jose. New grand leaders weighed in last night for shore albie (12.56) and shore blue (14.98 that's a bruiser from shore...)

rphud 09-24-2017 07:21 AM

time to go!

Some fun reading from Derbies past........

rphud 10-01-2017 09:50 AM

somebody we know did pretty well on Striper Saturday

BasicPatrick 10-01-2017 07:12 PM

Surf Pirate took a daily and 2nd place for Striped Bass Saturday...I heard he has a great captain. Fishing is very slow right now

beamie 10-01-2017 09:55 PM

I need to ask this question, not looking to hijack this thread.

I have never fished this tourney, nor the Striper Cup (maybe once years ago)

But there was another thread earlier this month where several board members here were up in arms about the Striper Cup and the big fish people kill etc. Time to end it etc.

But where is that same outrage about the MV derby, why does this get a pass?

Just wondering.......

rphud 10-02-2017 06:38 AM

get's a pass, due to it's history or fund raising for kids to go to college or that all the fish are cleaned and filleted for the food program on island

This year I am only filling out slips for released fish. Just seemed like the thing to do. Might change my mind on a fly rod shore bone though.

I despise the derby...... but I would note that, in the last decade at least, very few large striped bass are weighed in. Way below what is killed for the Striper Cup or even a blitz weekend at the canal.

I've never fished the derby, I was on the island 2 years ago fishing during the derby. The amount of bass, blues and albies I saw KICKED TO shore and left to ROT in the sun for 2 -3 hrs was ridiculous. And by supposedly "veteran" anglers who should know better. No way in hell those fish are "fit for consumption". I have no problem with people keeping fish, just do it with some respect and and in a way that makes sure the fish is actual going to be edible. striped bass, bluefish, and albies are too valuable to kill and leave to rot in the sun, just to end up as lobster bait....

the derby needs to change with the times, just like every other tournament.

rphud 10-03-2017 07:48 AM

I am thinking people need to change more than the Derby. or people need to change first maybe.

The fillet station does reject fish. especially blues, that haven't been properly cared for. I've stood there and watched as they felt the fish, and threw them in the barrel with the racks.
