The Olympics

Put anything Olympics in this thread.

Who's watching them? What competitions are you looking forward to?

Anyone catch the diving competition? I heard a rumor that many of the divers were served some bad food prior to competition and had trouble getting off the toilet to compete:

I find it all pretty f'in boring.....not to mention when they started to let professional athletes play basketball and hockey......they ruined it!!! ZZZZzzzzzZZZzzzzzzz!

BigFish 08-01-2012 02:21 PM

Certainly agree here. Take cycling for instance...you have a handful of pro's who just came off the Tour de France and are in the best shape of the season...

How is a real amateur supposed to compete? It just looked like another race.

I enjoy watching some of the events. Yes in the big countries its all about money for many of the athletes but there are many more from around the world who are just amateurs who may not win but get the thrill of a lifetime just to go and compete.

What does dismay me is the supposed setting aside of politics for the Olympic period. IMO the western countries' news media is the most guilty of always finding a down side to report on when a "politically incorrect" country wins a gold medal in an event. That stuff makes we want to shut the TV off.

I have been watching the 49er class sailing on live webcasts and the racing has been very exciting since I grew up racing small one design boats... this Aussie designed racing class is amazing when the wind blows above 12-15 knots... they plane easily and both the crew and skipper are on trapezes...watching them tack is like ballet

I actually enjoy it. I like winter a little more than Summer though.
Wonder when they will include fishing as a sport?

I love it!! Yea the pro basketball players do nothing for me but there are so many other sports that it doesn't matter too me. I love swimming!! Watched the kayak event last night and that was intense. So many great stories of hard work and effort. I love the Olympics!!!

Saltheart 08-02-2012 10:35 AM

What ever happened to track and field events. I can remember when track and field got 90% of the coverage and maybe some gymnastics. Now there is little to no coverage of the track and field.

What about women's beach volleyball?! Come on, everybody likes that, no? I think there should be a cable channel dedicated to it!!:grins:

Olympics are 2 weeks long, track and field is typically the second week, more of the grand finally

Piscator 08-02-2012 10:46 AM

Google "Netherlands Womens Field Hockey Team" and complain no more!

Great! I like to watch the Track and Field. Reminds me of my youth! :)

spence 08-02-2012 11:07 AM

I'm watching a bunch of the prime time coverage. I think the Internet is also hurting the Olympics...unless you see an event live it's too easy to catch the result on a news site before you see the replay.

Hasn't started yet. They always split the most watched sports in half. Track and Field, and swimming, are never contested at the same time.

One of my favorite TV events to watch. Could do without seeing NBA allstars though. Not in the spirit of the Games I grew up knowing.

New judo gold medalist now lives just down the road with her fiance. Great story there. Emotional medal ceremony.

Womens marathoner, Shalane Flanagan, is from my street. Obviously doesn't live there now, but her parents are flying out tonight. Already set to take Shalane and her coach fishing when they are here in late September.

Saltheart 08-02-2012 05:33 PM

I have no issues with the basketball teams make up of players. For decades the russians , czechs , etc fielded professional hocky teams , the rules changed so now our best players can play. Now I do agree about the interest level in watching them. I think they were favored by 46 points for the last game! :) Not exactly something exciting to watch.

fishbones 08-03-2012 08:46 AM

How did someone at NBC not catch this before it went on the air?

NBC Air Racist Monkey Commercial After Gabby Douglas Olympics Gold Medal - YouTube

Saltheart 08-03-2012 10:52 AM

Yes that was particularly bad timing.

Great job by Gabby to win though. real tough competition breathing down her neck the whole way but she stood up to the pressure like a true champ. Good thing she had a lead going into the final event because that Russian girl Komova did what looked to be a perfect job in her floor exercises. very exciting competition IMO.

Clogston29 08-03-2012 11:59 AM

i enjoy it. don't have any problem with pros being involved either. i'd rather watch the best of the best compete than the best who have decided not to go pro yet, or whose countries pay them to be amatures. the basketball sucks, but it shouldn't be an olympic sport anyway. i'd be good if the olympics was limited to track and field, swimming, gymnastics, weight lifting, etc.

fishbones 08-07-2012 09:07 AM

Here's another reason to watch.

The 8 Most Beautiful Olympic Javelin Throwers

I've got dibs on Leryn Franco. You guys can decide amongst yourselves who gets who out of the other 7.
