Venezuela assembly gives Chavez decree powers

* Socialist president given powers for 18 months

* Chavez had asked for one year

* Move is part of a raft of legislation

* Parliament also passed tough new banking rules (Adds details, background)

By Frank Jack Daniel

CARACAS, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Venezuela's parliament gave President Hugo Chavez decree powers for 18 months on Friday, outraging opposition parties that accused him of turning South America's biggest oil producer into a dictatorship.

The move consolidated the firebrand socialist leader's hold on power after nearly 12 years in office, and raised the prospect of a fresh wave of nationalizations as the former paratrooper seeks to entrench his self-styled "revolution."

Chavez had asked for the fast-track powers for one year, saying he needed them to deal with a national emergency caused by floods that drove nearly 140,000 people from their homes.

But the Assembly, which is dominated by loyalists from his Socialist Party, decided to extend them for a year and a half.

According to Politifact the only big promises broken one might file under "change" are this and the not hiring of lobbyists. Otherwise his track record isn't that bad.

It's disappointing, but isn't earth shaking either. I think on some bills -- such as the extension of tax cuts with the year coming to a close -- need to get wrapped to ensure nothing trips them up.

Here is a list of broken promises for you Spence. It's too long for me to post here..

PolitiFact | The Obameter: Obama's Campaign Promises that are Promise Broken

The vast majority of Obamas pledges are either in the works or stalled. With the "change" coming in January he's going to have a problem with alot of these.

The problem is that it's pretty apparent that both sides are gonna lie. Bush lied and Obama is looking like a jacket full of hollow promises. What is the alternative?

What lies did Bush tell?

If you're referring to WMD in Iraq, there is a difference between lying and being wrong. Analyzing intelligence isn't an exact science, and lots of leaders, including Bill Clinton, Hilary Clinton, Al Gore, and John Kerry all said they thought Iraq had WMD..

Bush kept us save for 7 years after 09/11, when every terrorism expert said we'd be attacked again. He did that without trampling on the constitution, despite what crazies on the left say. He lowered taxes for everyone. And he saved the lives of more than 1 million AIDS victims in Africa, and instead of getting the Nobel Peace prize he deserved, he got called a racist for his efforts.
