Oatmeal for Breakfast
Started eating oatmeal for breakfast. Now its not the first time I had oatmeal of course but its the first time I decided to try to have it every day.
I have been cooking Quaker Quick Oats and adding cinnamon and brown sugar. It tatses good. I was thinking of trying some oatmeals that maybe take longer (longer boil) to cook but are less processed and maybe better than Quick Oats in overall taste ,texture, etc. Was wondering what other oatmeal brands people really think are good and what do you add to your oatmeal. |
Real maple syrup and raisins

SH, Quaker has a bunch of different flavored instant flavors, but you
need 2-3 packages to fill the bowl and still doesn't fill you up. Used to cook the whole oats stuff with cinnamon, good for blood sugar, but swtiched to Cheerios topped with a banana and fresh raspberries or blueberries in season and add some cinnamon. Easier to make,tastes great, fills me up and adds some antioxidants. |
straight oat meal lacks flavor
so we add raisins (ditto mike) cinnamon yep! and /or a teaspoon of buckwheat honey because two packets of the flavored oat meal is a bit to much sweetness so we sometimes use just one with more of the regular instant Oatmeal ~ old mr Pearson used ta SAY Often Oats are good for Horses! ( with a smile ) |

Ihave been an oatmeal eater since I was kid. Quick oats is just whole oats milled down finer so it cooks quicker. I prefer the steel cut whole oats. Longer cooking but better consistency IMO. Lots of combo grain hot cerals out there too. Got to have honey and raisins and maybe some apples or bananas or all of the above. I also will put wheat germ on top too. McDonalds oatmeal is a decent deal in a rush

stone ground oats... honey... nuts...rasins, cranberries or any dried fruit... skip the sugar..adding sugar defeats the purpose..

Its a convience thing - the steel cut oats (come in a tin can) take a while to cook but taste almost nutty and the texture is much better. Less processing generally means better for you as well. I have to admit they really only come out 3 or 4 times a year on cold saturday or sundays when we have time. If I am going to all that trouble premium toppings as suggested above all come into play. I actually enjoy oatmal with salt and a little butter as well. I dont think it just has to be a sweet thing. I ussually use the instant or quick cook stuff ona daily baisis 2 times a week or so before work which is OK but nowhere near the same thing.

Anybody use McCann's Steel Cut?

We do regular Quaker Oats almost every day. Some days its banana's, apples, cranberries. Others its a cup from a bag of frozen berries my wfe gets from BJ's (strawberrys, black and rasberrys). Whenever in season or even frozen blueberries are the best. To almost anything I add maple syrup and/or cinnamin.

I forgot to add this, I microwave them in a bowl of milk for three minutes

Since I'm only making for one person , the amount of time to boil 16 oz of water in a pan is almost nothing.
When I do instant oatmeal , I use the MW. From what I read the difference between quick oats and steel cut is just 5 minutes of boiling. I can handle that.I like the frozen berry idea and will have to try it. Fresh fruits like a pint of berries tend to go bad on me before I can use it up but frozen I can keep in the freezer and have a handful a day with no waste. My biggest problem with almost all produce products is I end up throwing half away. When I can buy like 2 apples and two bananas its OK but a bag full I tend to waste a lot. Anyway , still hoping to hear if anybody uses McCanns and is it good? |
This is the Stuff I always get.....pretty reasonably priced....takes about 15 minutes to make. I get the Extra Thick Cut Oats.

Regular Quaker Oats have a better texture than the quick oats, and have an even thicker texture if you use milk or some milk substitute like soy milk to boil them in instead of water. Bring them to a boil in the milk till they are about to bubble over then turn heat down to a simmer for another 4-5 minutes. It may be important to stir while bringing to a boil or the milk might stick at bottom and burn. And stir, for same reason, a few times till done.

My dad's favorite was to top it with a little vanilla ice cream. It's friggin' awesome. And maple syrup of course.

frozen berries usually. Lingonberries, huckleberries, blueberries, raspberries. Other honorable mentions are honey, wheat germ, bananas, yogurt, maple syrup, ground flax seed, nuts, a bit of your favorite fruit preserve, or combination of any of these! :)

My favorite is Vermont Morning. Might find it in specialty stores or you can get it online. Mixed grain, cooks pretty quickly and has great flavor.

I like the steel cut with raisins and about a tbsp of peanut butter. Will mix it up once in a while with my buddy from VT's maple syrup or honey.

I read there is a big health difference between the "instant" oatmeals and those you cook 5 mins or more. The article said the instant was like eating white bread and the slower cooked like eating whole grain and much better for you. I eat the Quaker oats 5 min at least 2 times a week. 1 and a half cups of water, bring to boil add 1 cup oats cook 5 mins. Top with a little maple syrup and fresh berries. Right now I'm using blue berries even though not that good this time of year.

Well I went to the store and got nuts , craisins, blueberries , bananas, raisins and I already have the Maple syrup, brown sugar and Cinammon. I still need some Raspberries (probably frozen) . Gonna be like a Chemistry Lab in my kitchen each morning.
When you use frozen fruit do you put it in to boil while the oats are cooking or just add the frozen berries on top off the cooked bowl full? Wanted to get some steel cut oats but ended up forgetting that (make a list next time!). The cost defference between all the oat cereal possibilities is negligible. Its just the cooking time and a few extra minutes to cook it doesn't matter to me now that I'm retarded..oops I mean retired. :) |

I throw a cup or two of Quaker, a hand full of frozen berries, and not quite submerge the whole thing in milk. Mike it for 3-3:30 minutes, add cinnamon, syrup, sugar or any other mix ins and stir it up. Comes out perfect everyday, berries all thawed out and heated up to the same temp as the oatmeal. My two year old has been addicted to it since he started eating real food.

I used up all the quaker quick oats. i want to try the steel cut oats next. |
