3m 52million

pmueller 04-21-2007 07:33 PM

Quick cure is ok, but if you have the time to let the 5200 cure, its the best.

keeperreaper 04-21-2007 07:42 PM

5200 hands down. its the marine equivalent of duct tape.:rocketem:

"Is there anything that 5200 doesnt work on??" acrylic, plexiglass, wet wood, etc. I use Siro-flex as an alternative. 4.99 a tube at the local lumber yard and cleans up with water. Plenty strong enough for most applications and you don't have to use all in a day or two. My stone counter guys use it (RTV variety). You can lift the kitchen island by the top once it's cured.

everything has its place.

5200 is great to seal and hold.

lifecaulk makes a nice seal that you don't need a jackhammer to break.

epoxy is good for permanent hard fixes.

etc....

JohnR 04-23-2007 09:14 AM

West Systems Epoxy ;) and Bi-Axial Cloth - until you need to cut a hole - then it's 5200

Mr. Sandman 04-23-2007 09:51 AM

That 5200 is really amazing stuff for most repairs. It stands up forevever and is very strong. If you have a real serious problem and need a lot of bulk strength then I agree, the west system epoxy is problably the way to go. But for something that comes out of a tube...that stuff is impressive.

RIROCKHOUND 04-23-2007 09:58 AM

West system is good stuff.
I did some repairs on the r/v with WS that will probably outlast the rest of the hull!

Anyone ever try Marine Tex?
Years ago, I blew a head gasket on an old Johnson I had. When I took the head off I noticed that the head was gouged and the cylinder had a crevasse in it that went into the cylinder I'd say about an inch or two. It was in far enough where the piston ring rides. The motor was junk the way it was and I couldn't afford another one so I figured I'd try to repair it with Marine tex. I gooped the stuff on, sanded it smooth, reassembled the motor with a new head gasket and ran it another two years with no problems. I sold the motor and the next guy ran it at least a few more years untill the motor finally developed a lower end noise, which had nothing to do with my repair.
Since then, I've repaired several automotive cylinder heads with the stuff.

5200

Gentlemen, I must disagree. 5200 is good but the BEST sealent is Bostiks 920 fast set urethane sealent . Fresh/salt ,wood /glass, stainless/glass this stuff lasts for years and sticks to anything . I have not yet found anything except Teflon that it won't stick to . Comes in black and white tack free in less than 90 mins. Also less $$$$.

Saltheart 04-23-2007 10:40 AM

I used to like Polysulfide (is that LifeCalk?) Sticks to anything . only draw back is it stinks like hell and is hard to get off your hands , etc. Also it doen't last forever. it gets hard after a while and can crack.

capesams 04-23-2007 11:24 AM

Heard about this stuff thats out does all other's called "Clamma juice" stickyer then an old tar pit, but the back of the label say's may attract bluefish when used below the water line.

JohnR 04-23-2007 12:08 PM

Marine Tex is great ;)

MakoMike 04-23-2007 12:52 PM

They're all great for different uses. 5200 is great if you're never going to take the thing apart. marinetex is good to fill gaps, lifecaulk is good where you may want to take it apart someday. Different products for different applications.
