Levon Helm

Levon Helm, singer and drummer of The Band, is in “the final stages” of cancer, according to a statement from his family. Helm, who was diagnosed with throat cancer in the 1990s, damaged his vocal cords after undergoing radiation treatment. In the statement, Helm’s wife Sandy and daughter Amy announced that the 71-year-old musician was in the final stages of his illness.

Levon Helm, who helped forge a deep-rooted American music as the drummer and singer for the Band, died on Thursday in Manhattan. He was 71 and lived in Woodstock, N.Y.

His death was announced by a spokeswoman for Vanguard Records, for which he had recorded several albums. He had been suffering from cancer for several years.

In Mr. Helm’s drumming, muscle, swing, economy and finesse were inseparably merged. His voice held the bluesy, weathered and resilient essence of his Arkansas upbringing in the Mississippi Delta.

I remember this series (Classic Albums, I think on VH1) back some time ago - late 90's? Anyways I just stumbled across this clip from it. All of the shows in that series were really incredible to watch.

The Weight. I posted this on the main page but figured it might get more looks here. She's an amazing talent and a good friend. We partied when we were younger, so proud to see her doing what she loves. Check her out!
