Macs and Yaks!

Well I heard we had some macs around, so I grabbed myself a sabiki rig and off I went. Picked up a few macs, tossed one behind me and BOOM, ZZZZZZZZZZ fish on! I'll tell ya what live lining is a rush from the kayak! Didn't land any monsters, but good times. I trolled and lobbed them into the rocks. Trolling was cool because the rod tip would go insane, I would look back and see the mac dancing on the service then watch it just get nailed by a nice fish!

It was kinda funny, I would go jig up some macs, then liveline one to a fish, but the other ones I tossed in the yak were dead, so I would go jig up another and live line that one, then repeat! Lot of paddling, but I just couldn't resist, once I got a taste of the macs I had to get more!

I'd love to figure out how to keep them alive in the yak, maybe tow a bait well, or anchor one somewhere close to the fishy spots? I don't think a 5 gallon bucket in the yak would do it.

Nice post, Matt. Glad you got into them.

Matt get a round close basket, either a ring of styrofoam or inner tube any thing to make it float then rig some kind of cover, I use an old towel Then just tow the basket around with you should hold about 20 macs

Sounded like a blast. I went by a few yakers this past weekend and one was towing a milk crate with one of those noodles tie-wraped to it. Couldn't see what they were using on top, but defiantely a low budget idea.

Looks like you had a good time. I don't fish from a yak but I think one possibility might be the floating-collapsible fish baskets that bass pro shops sells for about $15.
