what speed and what should i troll in the spread. mix it up a little i guess - some ballys, green machines. bars? jet heads?

if you wern't such a puss we'd take yours. piscators gonna max out his credit card on safety equipment and a few new setups and we're gonna run his contender south for mahi soon. as far as the canyons - i've got a customer w/ the right rig and is willing but i need to fish w/ him once or twice first

6 knots for the canyon and run the bars in close. Green machines and rainbow are killers down there as well as ballyhoo both skirted with islanders and naked.

Don't leave the dock without ballyhoo!!

You will be surprised how close to the boat they hit, also pick up a couple of green tuna feathers and bring a handful of cedar plugs and troll them right in tight to the boat...right on the edge of the wash. The simple green and back feather was taking some decent fish. Also they will pick up skipjack which then can be bridled and live trolled (for marlin) or used for chunk bait at night.

The spreader bars in the first or second wave. Watch for the massive explosive hits 30' behind the boat.

scatter the ballyhoo in the spread. Without question this works almost all the time out there. Also I like those small splash bars (with the built in bird) on the tip of the outriggers way out there all alone, sometimes those hammer the fish.

Mix it up, you will find what works, keep your radio on, there are usually boats out there chatting it up and finding what is working for others and where is usually pretty easy. It's a big ocean. find the temp breaks and fish the edges.

pick your good weather days, it can be a looooong uncomfortable ride home if it is blowin hard. If it is flat you'll have a blast.

yup. rainbow on bars, green everywhere else...

on slow days put a chain or splash bar (or pink sluggo) way way back in the shotgun. suicide singles are better than no knockdowns!

6.5-7kt seems to be magic for our boat...

I run at 1,000 RPMs regardless of the speed that gives me. But its usually like Brian said between 6 and 7 knots. in addition to what Brian and Sandy said I always run birds in front of whatever I'm dragging off the outrigger tips and the center rigger.

birds on the riggers as well, usually with a Green machine or similar.

I'm kind of partial to jet heads behind the birds, but anything that runs straight is good for tuna.

just out of curiosity what is typically out there for bait?

In the canyon half beaks, squid, etc.

The stomachs of the fish were packed with 80% squid (about 3" long) and the other 20% had small skipjack (about 12") Also there were some small red shrimp in some of them as well. The mahi were loaded with this shrimp, they are small though, about 1/2 ".
