I hate deer

Heading up 81 North towards the Salmon River for some steelhead fishing, pass the sign that says Pulaski 11 miles. Blast a 8 pointer square doing 75 mph. Most violent thing I have been a part of. Ruined the weekend and totalled the car. Drive carefully. now need to raise some money for a new ride.

ProfessorM 11-02-2008 03:06 PM

That sux's. Hope everyone is ok. I saw a fresh dead one on 495 in middleborough on my way to the canal this morning. 75. man that thing, and your ride, must have been shattered.

Backbeach Jake 11-02-2008 03:59 PM

That does suck, I hit a doe on 25 last Fall.

Striperhound 11-02-2008 04:28 PM

Both airbags deployed. I got roughed up a bit by the airbag but good thing is I know airbags work now, found out the hard way. The deer was and the car were crushed. I was amazed at the damage that thing did but then again I hit is broad side.

Buck through windshield

In Carver a couple of nights ago. A buddy of mines mother was driving. Her girlfriend the passenger had to be med-flighted with extensive head and face injuries.

one night on rt 4 in exeter I witnissed the car in front of me (a small acura) nail a huge buck.. the buck went over the roof and did a 720 in mid air and landed in front of me and exploded in a spray of blood, guts fur and antlers.. I had to was the blood off of my windshield..

nasty.

Glad your OK 'hound...

I do 120 miles on 495 everyday and I've had days where I counted 5 fresh kills. One morning at 4:30 I missed a buck by a fraction of a second at 80 mph. It seems like it's just a matter of time before I nail one. I'm trying to figure out what the optimal speed would be to minimize my damage.

Faster or slower?

Raven 11-02-2008 07:00 PM

cars can be replaced
Glad your OK man

Saw a dead one on 1a yesterday. Last week, dead tired after an all nighter i came close to smacking a huge buck going 75 on route one. Jumped over the jersey barrier and landed 15 ft in front of me in the middle of my lane. Wasnt half alseep after that. :eyes:

Sorry to hear, must have ruined your trip for sure. Glad your OK. :)
Two years ago we had a woman killed inside the car as the deer thrashed around with his hoofs cutting her head andthroat.

Have hit 2 over the years with alot of damage, both came out of nowhere.

So far since using the deer whistles i've been ok and see them pick up heir ears at a distance when you approach. The electric ones are the best.

What are deer whistles?

My wife hit a doe a month back doing 35mph 5 grand in damage.

Now here is one for the "I don't believe it" category:
My brother RAN OVER a buck up in the NH Lakes region with his Geo Metro (He calls it his "clown car", an you would too when you see a 270lb. guy climb out of this sub-sub compact.)
He saw the deer in time to brake, but the deer was hit in the hind quarters, kbnocked down and rideen over by the car. The ONLY damage to the car was a dented hood. The police officer that took my brothers info didn't believe the report until he saw the scene firsthand.

I've had more than my share of roadside wildlife encounters, only mine have been with moose.
With a deer, the collision "could" be fatal, but with a moose it "ususally" is!

I hit a big doe w/ my Toy Extra Cab 4X4 several yrs back. Cost me $2000 damage and I was lucky to have a super strong brushguard (True Radius Bending) otherwise it would have had more damage and I would have gotten stuck in CT as well.

Funny part of it is I was coming home from unsuccessfuly deer hunting and hit one going about 35 mph !! Lots of blood and fur. Hit it almost entirely broadside (more to passenger side). Stopped car and called my buddy up and state police came. PU was driveable. Looked for almost an hr - never found the deer. :( Chances are it died, we just couldn't see much in the ground fog. My buddy went back out the next morning and looked some more.

I was glad I was in a vehicle where I was higher up. If I had hit it in a subcompact it could have come into the wind shield and done some harm.

Striperhound: you are lucky to be alive there dude - you were driving much faster than I was. Good to hear airbags work!! :D

Deer biologist in CT told me those whistles for deer that fit on the car don't work. It just gives the drive a better sense of false security. :( Not sure if the electronic ones are effective or not. I'll have to ask him next time I see him.

That does suck, sorry to hear that. Glad you are OK.

I've hit two in my life. One in my wife's car, did about $2 grand worth of damage to the fron fenders and hood, came out of nowhere. I was doing about 35 on a back country road, next thing I know there is a deer on the hood of the car. A couple of years ago I hit one with my truck (chevy silverado) only damage wa one cross piece knocked out of the grill, I guess the giher bumper was the key, knocked the thing about 1/4 mile down the road doing about 30 MPH.

Glad to hear you are ok,what an inconvenience to get into a vehicle accident not to mention total it,but worst of all being 5+ hrs. from home.:wall:

I hit a good sized deer on the X press way just under the Furnace Brook Pkwy I was driving a 1985 F-150 good size truck anyway I hit it broad side on the drivers smashed my windshield bent the pillar my over sized side view mirror ripped it open and then my rear bumper caught the rest of it and completely gutted it.
I lucked out that was it.

A moose will peel the top right off an average sized car.

Spent enough winters living in the White Mountains to see what happens. :err:

And came close a couple times to nailing one. :eek5:

Rt16 from Jackson, NH to Gorham, NH might as well be THE gauntlet.
