Things you have to believe in to be a Republican today:

(1) Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals and Hillary Clinton.

(2) Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when W's daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him, and a bad guy when Bush needed a "we can't find Bin Laden" diversion.

(3) Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is Communist, but trade with China and Vietnam is vital to a spirit of international harmony.

(4) The United States should get out of the United Nations, and our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against Iraq.

(5) A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind without regulation.

(6) The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in speeches, while slashing veterans' benefits and combat pay.

(7) If condoms are kept out of schools, adolescents won't have sex.

(8) A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our long-time allies, then demand their cooperation and money.

(9) Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy, but providing health care to all Americans is socialism.

(10) HMOs and insurance companies have the best interests of the public at heart.

(11) Global warming, evolution and tobacco's link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools.

(12) A president lying about an extramarital affair is an impeachable offense, but a president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is
solid defense policy.

(13) Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages and censoring the Internet.

(14) The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades, but George W Bush's driving record is none of our business.

(15) Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness and you need our prayers for your
recovery.

(16) What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital national interest, but what Bush did in the '80s is irrelevant.

I have been to a number of these.
so far each one has been held to properly retire flags that have been proudly displayed and are too tattered and worn to continue to be used.

We live in America and freedom is what we stand for.

I am proud to live in a country where I could, If I so chose to, burn a flag to show the ultimate distaste with the leadership of this country.

I hope it never comes to it but with the fiasco of the last 6 years it sure has come close.

Burning a flag is very very powerful speech.
I would be excersising my right to Freedom of speech.

Those freedoms that deserve the most protection are the ones that people are freaking out about when people use them.

the American people have been too quick to give up freedom in the name of percieved safety.

Free Speech can never be given up.
never.

Burning an American flag is the most disgraceful act one can do. Its shows a total lack of respect to the men and women who gave thier lives defending that flag over the years.

Anyone who burns a flag (other than to properly retire an old flag) is a loser in my opinion.

Be proud of our flag, remember what it stands for, remember the countless veterans who have lost thier lives defending that flag.

If you burn a flag in protest, you're basiclly saying %$%$%$%$ you to America and our veterans.

Burning a Flag in protest is a dispicable act that should be protected by the Constitution. That little document drafted up by people smarter than me, smarter than you Skippy, and smarter than the majority of people on both sides of the isle... For Freedom, for their brothers, and for that large piece of paper - many soldiers served and many died. Your Freedom is that collection of inalienable rights, in that collection is the inalienable right to ptotest, which includes if the person is nastily inclined,to burn the flag...

<I may have hijacked this thread into a constitution discussion>
Yes.
It is a very powerful statement.
In todays world of the photo-op and sound-byte,
any non-violent action that can strike such a resounding chord with so many people most surely deserves all the protections afforded to it by the constitution.

I would like to see historians, lawyers and linguists get together and take a closer look at the constitution.
they should then decipher and translate from the language of 1776 into the language of 2006.

by not doing this, every year we are allowing the meaning of the constitution to "change" as we ignore the natural evolution of language.

just as you cannot read olde-englifh or Shakespear word for word and have the same meaning, so it is with the legal documents that form the basis of our society.

we are a scared people who have been blissfully ignorant of the expense paid to validate our rights. Note that our rights were not "earned". They were codified and defined. Those rights are "self-evident".
However, ignorance is what is allowing us to "give them up".
frequently it is under the guise of being outdated, that we are in different times and dont need them anymore, that they are distasteful to some, that they make us feel un-safe.

It seems to me quite silly that we should go to such lengths to enfore behavior that isn't even a problem in the first place. This flag burning discussion is simply a wedge issue so the GOP can fan the flames (pun intended) of partisan divide.

Aside from the obvious, that burning the American flag is the only way to dispose of it properly, how about the far greater visual offence that we all encounter every day...

That tattered and shredded American flag your neighbor put up several years ago, on a whim of patriotisim or even on 9/11, and hasn't had the time to look at since.

Is it a sign of disrespect, or just a symbol of someone persuing the American dream?

worse -- the flags littering the x-way rumble strips.

my peeve is the flag that never comes down at night and DOESNT have a proper spotlight on it.

if you read the documents about proper display of the flag you will see that not only should you not drop it on the ground, you also should not make "disposable" flags.

no napkins with flags.
no little flag toothpicks

if I can find the doc I will post a link.

Here's the info on the Flag. We spend a lot of time in scouting making sure that the kids learn the proper way to respect the flag.
